UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESPER HANSEN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WATERBURY MFG. CO., 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
ELECTRIC SOCKET-SHELL AND SHADE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESPER HANSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Socket-Shells and Shade-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view of a lamp socket con structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a sectional view on the line ab of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 a broken sectional view showing the shade holder engaged with the socket.
This invention relates to an improvement in an electric shell and shade-holder, the object being to provide simple means for firmly securing the shade holder to an incandescent lamp socket; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a shade-holder 2 of desired style formed with a centrally arranged downwardly turned flange 3 corresponding substantially in diameter to the lower end 4 of an incandescent lamp socket 5 of usual construction and which is provided with the usual annular rib 6 near its lower end. In the lower end of the socket on opposite sides the metal is struck out to form nibs 7 which are adapted to engage with the lower edge of the flange 3 of the shade holder when the shade holder Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 1, 1911.
Patented July 18, 1911. Serial No. 624,489.
is set over the lower end of the socket. The rib 6 prevents the upward movement of the shade holder, and the nibs 7 prevent the downward movement. To permit the shade holder to be engaged and disengaged from the socket, the socket is formed with a vertieally arranged slit 8 adjacent to one of the nibs 7 which permits the metal of the socket above the nib to be pressed inward out of the plane of the flange of the shade holder.
In applying the shade holder an upward force .of the shade holder against the socket will crowd the metal of the socket inward sufiiciently to permit the shade holder to slip over the nibs; but to disengage the shade holder it will be necessary to slightly press the metal above the nib to force the nib out of the path of the flange when the shade holder may be readily removed. /Vhile the shade holder is readily applied to and removed from the socket, when once engaged it is not liable to be accidentally disengaged.
I claim The combination with a shade holder formed with a centrally arranged downwardly extending flange, of a socket formed at its lower end with outwardly projecting nibs adapted to be engaged with the lower edge of the flange of a shade holder, the socket also formed with a vertically arranged slit adjacent to one of said nibs.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESPER HANSEN.
