I NVENTOR. Murvln C. (Judson Attorneys Patented Oct. 24, 1950 ADJUSTABLEPORTABLE LAMP AND LENS Marvin C. Carlson, Valparaiso, Ind., assignor to McGill Manufacturing Company, Inc., Valparaiso, Ind., a corporation of Indiana Application March 30, 1946, Serial No. 658,489
2 Claims. (01. 240102) This invention relates generally to portable lamps and in particular to a portable lamp having a reflector and lens forproviding the desired amount of illumination on a particular area.
Portable lamps having guards for protecting the bulb thereof have been in general use in machine shops, garages and other places where a light capable of being handled roughly is needed. In prior art device various types of reflectors have been provided associated with the guard for providing a certain amount of directiveness to the rays from the lamp. For very precise work, lamps having lenses for directing the rays to a particular spot have been used. However, the use of a lens with a portable lamp has not been entirely satisfactory due to the danger of breakage of the lens and to the likelihood of the lens becoming dirty reducing the effectiveness thereof.
It is an object, therefore, of the present invention to provide a portable lamp which is of such construction that it will withstand roug-h usage and which will be effective to provide general illumination of an area or to provide intense illumination of a particular small area.
It is a further feature of this inventionto provide a portable lamp which is adapted for use either for general illumination o as a spot light witha mounting therefor which permits the light to be directed as desired.
A feature of this invention is a provision of a portable lamp having a socket adapted to receive a standard incandescent light bulb and a guard formed of heavy wire adapted to be secured to the socket to protect the bulb, the guard further serving as a mounting for a reflector and a lens which are adapted to cooperate with the bulb to provide either general illumination or intense illumination of a small area as is desired.
A further feature of this invention is the provision of a portable lamp with a guard, reflector, and lens assembly and an adjustable mounting for the lamp permitting the lamp to be installed on a fixed member and either general or spot illumination directed as desired.
A still further feature of this invention is the provision of portable lamp having a guard and lens assembly and a mounting for the lens to permit the lens to be removably positioned on the guard and to protect the lens from breakage.
Further objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates the portable lamp according to this invention and a typical installation in which the lamp is applicable;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the portable lamp; 7 Fig. 3 is a front view of the lens assembly; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the lens as sembly of Fig. 3 along the lines 4-4. 1 In practicing my invention I provide a socke for a light bulb which is of sturdy construction and a combination g-uard, reflector and lens assembly removably secured to the socket comprising a cage constructed of welded wire members having a reflector positioned on one side thereof and a lens unit removably secured to the end remote from the lamp socket. An adjustable mounting is provided for the socket permitting universal movement of the lamp with respect to the support, permitting the lamp to be positioned so that general illumination from the reflector and the spot of light produced by the lens mayeach be directed on any area desired.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in Fig. 1 is shown the portable lamp ID of the invention secured to a frame member I l of a building in such a manner that a spot of light will be directed on a vise l2 which is mounted ona work bench I 3. An alternative position of the lamp is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 with the spot of light directed downwards and general illumination from the reflector directed on the bench to provide a less amount of light on the vise but to illuminate a larger area adjacent the work bench.
The lamp I0 is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as having a socket 14 adapted to receive a light bulb I 5. The socket is shown in Fig. 2 as having a switch with an actuating, member I6. It is pointed out that the switch need not belocated in the socket but that the lamp could be remotely controlled in a well known manner. A combination guard, reflector and lens assembly is secured to said socket. For the purpose of preventing breakage of the bulb l5, a guard is provided including a clamp unit l'l adapted to be secured to the socket I4 and a cage l8 formed of longitudinal members l9 made of heavy wire which are welded to annular wire members 20 and to an annular ring 2| forming an open end. 'A hook 22 also made of heavy wire is welded to the annular members 20 to provide means for supporting the lamp. A reflector 23 made of thin metal which will retain a good polished surface is welded to the cage members as shown. The clamp U need not be secured tightly on the socket so that the guard and reflector may be turned relative to the socket so that light can be directed by the reflector on the area desired.
The annular member 2| is adapted to receive a lens unit 24 which is shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4. The lens unit includes an annular mounting member 25 having a lip 26 of the same outside diameter as the ring 2| and a recess portion 27 with an opening 28 therein on which the lens 29 is positioned. The lens 29 has an annular oifset portion 39 adapted to interfit with the opening 28. An annular securing member 3| is provided having openings 32 therein adapted to receive screws 33 which are threaded into openings 34 in the mounting member. The lens is held tightly between the securing ring 3| and the mounting 25. The lip 26 is provided with recesses 35 (Fig. 3) which cooperate with screws 36 threaded into the ring 2| for removably securing the lens unit to the guard. The projections have deep portions 31 which will permit the lens to be removed without completely removing the screws 36 by rotating the lens unit in a counter clockwise direction so that the portions 3'! register with the heads of the screws 36.
Referring again to Figs. 1 and 2, the mounting 38 for the lamp includes a clamping as-- sembly 39 adapted to fit into a recess 40 on the lamp socket to be adjustably positioned relative to the socket. For the purpose of supporting the lamp from a fixed member a U-shaped bracket 4| is provided which is connected to the clamping member 39 by screws 42 and which includes a screw 43 at the valley of the U to be secured to a member of a building as shown in Fig. 1 or to a work bench or other suitable support. The screw 43 is shown in Fig. 2 as a wood screw but it is apparent that any other type of screw or bolt may be substituted for the wood screw depending upon the material to which the lamp is to be secured.
From a consideration of the above description, it is apparent that a portable lamp is provided in which the mounting cooperates with the reflector and lens in such a way that the lamp can be adjusted to provide illumination of either a large area or a small spot and that the lamp can be focused on any spot as desired. The mounting for the lens is such that the lens can be easily removed if intense illumination of a small area is not desired and the lamp and guard can be used as a portable lamp in the usual man ner. The ofiset mounting for the lens places the lens in a position where it will not be easily broken by contact with tools or other objects and this mounting will absorb shock caused by dropping the lamp also tending to prevent breaking of the lens. the surface of the guard will not pick up as much dirt and foreign material as if it were on the very front of the guard and it will accordingly require less attention in this respect.
The lens not being positioned at Although I have described what I consider to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is apparent that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A guard and lens assembly for a portable electric lamp comprising a guard including a cage-like structure of heavy wires having an open end terminating in a circular ring, an angular lens mounting adapted to fit in the open end of said guard, said mounting having a first flange cooperable with the end ring of said guard and a second flange offset from said first flange so as to be disposed well within said guard, a lens secured to said second flange and disposed entirely within said mounting, said lens mounting being rotatable for at least a limited distance relative to said guard, and locking means for securing said first flange to said end ring when said lens mounting is in a given position relative to said guard.
2. A lens unit adapted to be positioned in an open-ended portable lamp guard, such unit comprising an annular lens mounting insertable in the open end of the lamp guard and capable of at least limited rotation relative thereto, said mounting having an inwardly ofiset flange adapted to be disposed well within the guard, a lens mounted on said flange and disposed entirely within said mounting, an annular member securing said lens to said flange, and locking means for securing said lens mounting to the guard in a predetermined relative position thereof.
