This invention relates to an electric lamp, and particularly to a portable insulated flashlight type of lamp which may be used as a trouble lamp in garages and other places utilizing the regulation house circuit voltage for its source of electric current supply.
The object of the invention is to provide a small, compact insulated flashlight type of portable electric lamp adapted to use the house circuit voltage and provided with means for concentrating the rays of light upon the object desired and preventing said rays of light from interfering with the vision of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a lamp of the character mentioned a yielding socket for the electric light bulb, said socket absorbing shocks received by the lamp and preventing the filament of the electric light bulb from breaking, and also allowing air to contact directly with the base of the electric light bulb.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the lamp that the various parts thereof may be easily and quickly assembled or dismantled when repairs or replace ments are required.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for making and breaking an electric circuit to the electric light bulb.
Still another object of the invention is to construct the casing of insulating material and provide said casing, together with the reflector, with perforations or openings so located that air may circulate freely through the lamp, thereby preventing overheating when the lamp is used continuously.
The invention consists in an electric lamp as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.

In the drawings, 5 represents a lamp casing constructed of insulating material and comprising a main body portion 6 from Which extends a cylindrical handle portion 7, the longitudinal median line of the latter being coincidental with that of the main body portion 6.
Detachably mounted within the handle portion 7 of the casing 5 is a base 8 constructed of insulating material, and said base is seated upon a shouldered portion 9 pro vided upon the interior of the handle. The base 8 is notched at 10 to receive a spline 11 which is formed integral with the handle 7, thereby preventing a rotary movement of the base within the handle, but permitting the base to slide longitudinally within said handle. The opposite sides of the base 8 are flattened at 12, thereby providing spaces between the edge of the base and the sides of the handle through which air may circulate. Mounted upon the base 8 is a socket 13 constructed of wire or metal strip and embodying therein'a helical portion 14. The socket 13 is secured to the base by screws 15 and 16, the latter also constituting a binding post to which an electric wire 17 is attached. An electric light bulb 18 is mounted in the socket 13, being screwed into the helical portion 14 thereof. When the electric light bulb 18' is located in position within the socket 13, the terminal end of said socket engages a screw 19 which is mounted in the base 8, the head portion of said screw being located within a recess 20 provided in said base. The terminal end of the electric light bulb projects a short distance into the recess 20 and if there is any action tending to tip the electric light bulb or spring the socket 13 out of its normal position, the extremity of said bulb will engage the surface of the recess 20 and limit the extent to which the bulb will tip.
The screw 19 is utilized as a means of securing an electric contact member 21 to the base 8. Also secured to the base 8 adjacent to the contact member 21 is a spring 22, at the outer extremity of which an electric wire -vided with a recess 26 into which the 6X- tremity of the contact screw 2% projects. The push button is shouldered at 27, thereby forming a thumb piece 28 which is located upon the exterior of the handle 7, and when it is desired to complete the electric circuit through the electric contact members 21 and 2t the push button 25 is pushed inwardly until the head of the screw an engages the contact member 21, and at this time if it is dcsirel to continue to keep the electric circuit closed, the push button is pushed laterally until the shouldered portion 27 engages the inner surface of the handle and the tension of the spring 22 ill hold the shouldered portion 27 of the push button against the inner surface of the handle until the push button is releaset A plate 29 of insulating material is mounted in the body portion 6 of the casing 5, being seated upon a shoulder 30 formed at the junction of the body portion with the handle 7. An opening 31 is provided in the plate 29 and opposite edges of said plate are flattened at thereby providing spaces through which air may circulate within the casing 5.
A reflector 33 is mounted within the main body portion 6 of the casing 5 around the electric light bulb 18. A flange 34 is provided at the outer edge of the reflector 33 and said flange rests against a shoulder 35 which is formed upon a rim 36 at the front of the casing 5. A lens 37 is mounted within the rim 3G and is held seated against the flange 34; of the reflector 33 by a locking ring 33.
A. plurality of perforations 39 are provided in th reflector 33 adjacent to the flange 34 thereofl while other perforations 40 are provided in the body portion 6 of the casing 5 adjacent to the rim 36 thereof. Another series of perforations -11 are provided in the casing 5 extending through the shoulder 30, while other perforations 42 are provided in the outer extremity of the handle 7 In use, the lamp of this invention is at tached in a well known manner to the source of electric supply, which is preferably the house current, and the circuit to the electric light bulb is controlled by operating the push button 25. ,Vhen it is desired to keep the electric light bulb illuminated permanently, the push button is pushed inwardly to bring the contactmembers 21 and 2a into engagement with each other and ti e button is then pushed laterally so that the shouldered por tion 27 thereof will catch upon the inner surface of the handle. The yielding socket 13 provides an eflicient means for holding the electric light bulb and absorbing the shocks and vibrations which occur in using the lamp.
The flattened portions of the base 8 and plate 29 allow air to circulate through the casing and around the various parts and prevent the lamp from overheating when it is used contini'ially. By mounting the electric light bulb within the body portion 6 of the casing 5, the electric light bulb and reflector are protected from dirt and grease. The reflector, furthermore, prevents the rays of light from the electric light bulb from being diffused, and by reflecting the light rays through the lens, concentrates the rays of light so that they may be directed upon the object which to be illuminated. By removing the locking ring 38 and pulling the push button 25 forwardly so that it will be disconnected from the contact screw 34 the entire mechanism of the lamp may be removed from the casing 5.

An electric lamp having, in combination, a casing embodying therein a handle portion, a socket comprising a helical spring mounted in said casing, an electric light bulb within said socket, an electric contact member connected to said bulb, a spring, an electric contact member attached to said spring, and a push button slidably mounted in said casing and adapted to open and close an electric circuit to said electric light bulb through said. contact members.
2. An electric lamp having, in combination, a casing embodying therein a handle portion, a base detachably mounted in said handle, a socket comprising a helical spring mounted upon said base, an electric light bulb within said socket, an electric contact membcr mounted in said base and connected to said bulb, a spring mounted upon the base, an electric contact member attached to said spring, and means to open and close an electric circuit to said bulb through said contact members.
An electric lamp having, in combination, a casing embodying therein a main body portion and a handle portion extending therefrom, a socket yieldingly mounted within said handle portion, an electric light bulb mounted within said socket, and a reflector for said electric light bulb wi hin said body portion, said body portion, handle and rcflector being provided with openings therein whereby air may circulate in an uninterrupted current through the casing from one end thereof to the other and around the electric light bulb and socket.
