WALL-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,32d, dated July 30, 1901.
Application filed November 17, 1900 Serial No. 36,888. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MOCALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarentum, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wall-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wall ties employed for securing a masonry wall to a frame wall or structure; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily driven into a frame wall.
The invention consists of a nail or driving portion and a securing member adapted to be secured between the layers of masonry; and the construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be definedin the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a frame wall and a portion of a masonry wall connected by my improved wall-tie, and Fig. 2 is a View in perspective of the tie disconnected from the walls.
The :reference numeral 1 designates the driving member of the tie, formed with an enlarged end 2 and adjacent to the enlarged end with an opening through which extends the anchoring member of the device, which comprises a single piece of wire bent centrally upon itself to form parallel arms 3 and then bent outwardly in opposite directions, forming circular extensions 4, which lie in the same horizontal plane.
The driving portion 1 of the device may be of any preferred form in cross-section and constitutes a nail which is adapted to be driven through the frame wal1, as shown in Fig. 1, while the circular extensions 4 are adapted to rest upon the adjacent layer of masonry.
After the nail portion 1 has been driven.
into the frame wall mortar is applied to the brick or layer of masonry which supports the arms 3 and 4 and another brickis placed thereon, thus firmly securing the wire portion of the tie between the layers of masonry.
The pivotal connection between the nail 1 and the wire portion of the tie adapts the latter to be turned up out of the way while the nail is being driven, thus greatly facilitating the application of the tie. After the nail has been driven home the wire portion is turned down upon the upper surface of the adjacent brick and the building of the wall is continued.
The construction of a wall-tie as above described affords a very simple and inexpensive device of this character and one which, as is obvious, may be readily applied and will secure the two walls together firmly.
It will be obvious that the invention is not restricted to the particular curvature or con tour of the laterally-extending arms 4:, since it is not essential that these arms be of circular form, but the same may be bent to angular or other shape without affecting their function or efficiency.
I claim- 1. A Wall-tie comprising a nail or driving member formed adjacent to its end with an opening through which extends the anchor-' ing member of the device, consisting of a wire bent upon itself to form parallel arms and then bent outwardly to form lateral extensions.
2. A wall-tie comprising a nail or driving member enlarged at one end to form a driv ing-head, and formed adjacent to the enlarged head with an opening, in combination with an anchoring member consisting of a single piece of Wire inserted through said opening and bent centrally upon itself to form latorally-extending arms which are adapted to be secured between the layers of masonry.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. MOCALL.
