UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE 1V. MESERVE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WALL-TIE AND ANCHOR-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.v 585,628, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed May 11, 1896. Serial No. 591,114. (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. MESERVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wall-Ties or Anchor- Irons, of which the following is a specification, illustrated by the accompanying drawlugs.
My invention relates to an improvement in bracket-ties, anchors, or hands for securing the facing to the more substantial part or body of a wall in buildings and for binding together walls built double.
Figure 1 represents a full-sized perforated wall-tie; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same plate, one end of which is turned at right angles to the plane indicated by letter a; Fig. 3, an elevation of an ashler-faced wall, showing the method of applying these ties in such cases.
Strips of iron have. been used as wall-ties for many years, but without the perforated clenching-spaces shown in the above draw directly uniting the upper and lower courses, riveting the tie into the wall through each opening its entire length.
The upturned end shown in Fig. 2 and end of the tie or anchor to caps, corbels, ornaments, and the like which are mortised out for the common anchor-iron.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1 A new article of manufacture, viz: a wall-tie made from a single piece of sheet metal of any desired width and thickness and in length suflicient to bond a facing to abacking adjacent thereto and having numerous perforations for the passage of mortar thereth-rough, as set forth and described.
2. Awall-tie or anchor-iron made from a single piece of sheet metal of any desired width and thickness and in length sufficient to bond a facing to a backing or wall adjacent thereto and having numerous perforations for the passage of mortar therethrough, and having one end turn at right angles to the plane of the other, in bracket form, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with a backing or wall and a facing immediately contiguous thereto, of metallic ties for bonding said facing to said wall, said ties consisting of strips of metal perforated to admit the mortar through them, and arranged in the wall transversely to the joint'between the backing and the facing, as
set forth.
