LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application led November 15, 1915. Serial No. 61,680.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB CHEMRINSKY., a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State o-f Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.
lVIy invention relates to levels, and particularly to levels for attachment to a straight edge board for both vertical and horizontal leveling, and which is particularly designed for use in leveling floors, partitions, etc.
The object of the invention is to provide a double level for vertical and horizontal use in which the bubble tubes are carried by a flat bracket plate adapted to lie in contact with one of the faces of the board and having abutment flanges adapted to engage and lie flat against the straight edges of the board, and which may be detachably fastened thereto, whereby the level may be easily, readily and conveniently employed for the purposes described.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a straight edge board showing my improved level attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the board with the device applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section through the clamping flange thereof.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a flat bracket plate 1 having at one end an extension 2, the bracket plate and its extension being provided with slots or openings 3 and 4, formed by portions of metal u displaced from the bracket plate, which portions of metal are rolled to provide the bubble tubes 5 and 6. The tube 5 extends transversely of the bracket plate and is employed for verticalv leveling, while the tube 6 eX- tends longitudinally of the bracket plate and is employed for horizontal leveling. yThe bracket plate is provided with an integral guard 7 which is arranged to protect the bubble tube 5 and prevent the same from breaking in case the level should be dropped or accidentally fall.
The plate 1 is provided at its opposite sides with abutment flanges 8 and 9. The flange 8 is arranged at right angles to the plate 1 and,is provided with pointed spurs or projections 10, while the flange 9 is formed with an opening 11 and is provided on its outer side with a spring clamping plate 12 having one or more spurs or projections 13.. A pivot member 14 extends across the opening 11 and a cam lever 15 is fulcrumed thereto and has a cam surface arranged to engage and force the clamping plate inwardly from the flange 9.
In the use of the device, the bracket plate 1 is arranged to lie in contact with one of the faces 16 of a board 17 having straight longitudinal edges 18 and 19, and the flanges 8 and 9 are disposed to lie against said straight edges, the device being applied in the manner described and the cam lever then operated to force the clamping plate of the flange 9 against the edge 19 and to draw the flange 8 against the edge 18, thus detachably clamping the device in position, the spurs upon the clamping plate and flange being forced into the wood and positively holding the device against slipping. Andoperator may then readily and conveniently employ the board for vertical and horizontal leveling in a manner peculiarly convenient in leveling fioors and partitions.
It will be obvious that the device may be detached from one board and applied to another and 'also conveniently carried upon the person of the user for use whenever required.-
I claim 1. A bubble level for attachment to a straight edge board for the purpose described, said level comprising a bracket plate adapted to engage one of the-faces of the board, bubble tubes arranged at right angles to each other upon said bracket plate, flanges upon the bracket plate to lie in contact with the edges of the board, and means upon said flanges to engage the board and detachably hold the bracket plate in position.
2. A device of the character described flange to engage and operate the clamping comprising a bracket plate, level tubes displate. 10 posed upon said bracket plate at right angles In testimony whereof I aX my signature to each other, flanges on said plate arranged in presence of two Witnesses.
at right angles to the sides of the bracket JACOB CHEMRINSKY. plate, spurs upon one of said flanges, a Witnesses:
clamping plate upon the other flange pro- MORRIS ELLER,
vided With a spur, and a cam lever on said EMANUEL ELLER.
