[NVE/VTORS 625/142 awe COLUMBIA PLANOCI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. N. DOW AND RICHARD E. WALSH, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
SHARIPENING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 4, 1911.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Serial No. 652,680.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE B. N. DoW and RICHARD E. WALSH, citizens of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Implements, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a device for sharpening knives or other edge tools, and has for its object to provide an implement which will have the maximum of durability and effectiveness combined with great economy in cost of construction.
The particular object of our invention is to improve and lessen the cost of manufacture of the form of sharpening implement disclosed in and covered by the patent granted March 1, 1910 to G. B. N. Dow, No. 950,530.
With these and other objects in view our invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of our invention, with a knife shown by dotted lines in sharpening position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the handle broken off Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the sharpener with the handle in elevation; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts of the sharpener shown in separated relation.
10 designates the handle of the device and 11 a sheet metal plate bent centrally to extend partly around one end of the handle and provided at its ends with feet 12. This plate is also provided with screw or bolt holes 13 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
14 and 15 designate a pair of similarly shaped plates, each being provided with V- shaped notches 16 on their opposite side edges, and screw or bolt holes 17 adapted to register with the holes 13 when the plates 14 and 15 are superposed upon the plate 11.
' 18 are screws passing through the holes 17 and 13 and into the body of the handle 10 and clamping a pair of sharpening blades 19, 19 between the two plates 14 and 15, the sharpening blades 19 being each of rectangular shape and crossing eachother centrally between the plates 14 and 15 and between the screws 1-8. The edges of the plates are arranged so that they just extend within the sides of the notches 16 in the plates.
From the foregoing construction it will be seen that our improved sharpening device is formed of three plates of sheet met-a1, which can be cheaply and easily stamped out in addition to the two sharpening blades and wooden handle and the two screws. The device is therefore very cheap to construct. In addition, by having the sharpening blades of proper length, and having the V-shaped notches on each side of the plates 14 and 15 the device is adapted for use by either a right-handed or a left-handed person.
We realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of our invention, and we therefore do not intend to limit ourselves to the specific form shown and described.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle, of a curved plate partially surrounding one end of the handle and provided with a pair of screw openings, a pair of similarly shaped clamping plates provided on each edge with a V- shaped notch and with screw openings extending through the body of the plates, a pair of rectangular sharpening blades extending across each other and located be tween the plates, and screws extendin through the openings in the three plates an intothe body of the handle, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we afix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. N. DOW. RICHARD E. WALSH.
