HAY-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,304, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEVI O. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardiner, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hay-Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to hay-knives; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap in its construc tion and thoroughly effective in its operation. A further object of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the handles maybe adjusted for a right or left handed operator.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hay-knife constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of parts detached.

Arepresents the blade, which may be formed with any desired number of waves or depressions, a, which decrease in their curvature as they near the end of the blade. By this construction of blade it is found that the same cuts the hay easier than with the usual serrated blade in common use. The upper end of this blade is provided with perforations or openings.

B represents the handle, which is slotted at its lower end to receive the end of the blade A, and is provided with perforations c, which register with the perforations b in the blade A. Thus it will be seen that the blade may be adjusted at any desired angle. The blade A is secured within the end of the handle B by means of a bolt, 0, the end of which is bent, and may be said to form a U-shaped bolt, the ends of the same .being screw-threaded to reeeive at one end a thumb-screw, and at the other an interiorly screw-threaded handle. 0. 4 It will be readily seen that this bolt, which serves as a lower handle, may be adjusted up on either side of the blade by simply removing the screw-threaded handle and thumbscrew and inserting the bolt upon the other 3 or opposite side of the handle. Thus it will be seen that the knife may be used by either a right or a left handed operator with but little trouble in adjusting the handle.

D represents the end handle, which is piv- 5 oted to the end of the main handle B, and may be adjusted upon either side of the same, for the purpose of adapting itself to the convenience of the operator.

From the foregoing description it will be 6 apparent that by the improved construction of blade shown and described the hay maybe cut with greater facility and case than with the serrated blade commonly used, and that by means of the improved handles the same E may be adjusted to suit the convenience of the operator.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 The combination, with a blade provided with perforations or openings at its end, of a handle having perforations at its end to register with the perforations of said blade, and aslot to receive the end of same, a U shaped7 bolt for securing the blade to the said handle, said bolt being screw-threaded at one end to receive a thumb-screw, and at its other end to receive an interiorly screw-threaded handle, as set forth. 8 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
