NITED STATES PATENT OiEEICE.
FRANK P. BREWER, OF ANGOLA, INDIANA.
PRUNlNG-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,980, dated February 21, 1893. Application filed March 10, 1892. Serial No. 424,474. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Angola, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pruning-Saws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to improve ments in saws especially designed for pruning purposes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall embody simplicity of construction and effectiveness in operation.
My invention consists in the construction relative arrangement and operation of the several parts constituting my improved saw, all of which will hereinafter fully and clearly appear. l
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings forminga part ofthis specification Figure l represents in side elevation my improved saw, and Fig. 2 detail views of certain of the parts.
rlhe reference lettera denotes the handle preferably round in its cross section and provided with a slot at one endto receive one end of the saw blade c. This blade has at each end thereof a hook shaped notch, one of which c engages a pin a extending through the slotted end of the handle.
b is a standard having an eye b which receives the handle, a suitable wedge g being interposed between said eye and handle to temporarily retain it at any desired position. The lower end of the standard is slotted to receive the other end of the saw blade which, as before stated, is provided with a hook shaped notch c2 which engages the bent portion f of the binding rod f which is passed through a hole formed therefor in the slotted end of the standard. This rod is passed through the handle and through a bevel washer d, and is screw-threaded on its outer end to receive a binding nut e which operates when turned to the right to increase the tension of the saw and securely lock the hook shaped notches and pins, and the handle being formed from wood having a spring, the tension is maintained. The saw when in place is at the proper angle to cut, and the entire length of the blade from point to heel may be utilized.
The saw as constructed in accordance with the above description is extremely light but possesses great strength. The blade may be easily withdrawn for sharpening or setting by turning the nut to the left, and may be as easily returned to place.
I claim- A saw of the class described comprising a handle having a slot in one end and a pin, a standard having an eye for said handle and a Wedge for retaining it in position, a slot in the outer end of the standard, a saw blade having hook shaped notches for engaging the ends of the handle and standard, a rod connected at one end to the standard and at` its other end to the handle by a binding nut substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK P. BREWER.
