W. H. FRITTS.
HANDSAW. No. 350,193. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
NITED STATES ATENT Erica.
WVILLIAM HENRY FRITTS, OF PLANO, ILLINOIS.
HAN DSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 350,193, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed August 31, 1885. Serial No. 175,821.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HENRY FRITTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Saw- Frame, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in saw-frames.
The objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a stretcher that will be rigid and remain in position when under strain; second, to form a suitable brace in combination with the stretcher; third, to provide clips to take the strain and prevent the frame-pieces from splitting where the pins hold the saw in place, and to provide means to fasten the clips to the frame-pieces; and, fourth, to form thepins for holding the saw so they will keep in place in the clips. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a view of frame. Fig. 2 is atop View of the stretcher. Fig. 3 is a section of frame, showing clip and pin in place and means for fastening clip to the frame. Fig. 4 is a view of clip, and Fig.- 5 is a view of pin.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. I
The tendency of stretchers as heretofore made has been to kink or buckle sidewise when under strain, and thus greatly impair the frame. As an improvement I use a stretcher, A, trussed sidewise. The stretcher is formed in halves, with a rivet near each end, forced apart in the center sufficient to form the truss and admit the end of the brace a as a key to the truss, with a rivet through the parts near the center of the stretcher. The clips B B are kept in place by clinch-nails, or by driving the points P P, Fig. 4, into the frame-pieces. I
(No model.)
provide the pins D D with a slightgroove near the points, that Will prevent them from working out when drawn against the clips.
The strain exerted by the saw-blade on the pin D is such as to cause the latter to enlarge the opening through which it passes in the wooden frame-piece,and cause it to work loose therein and move laterally for a very slight distance. This lateral play of the outer end of the pin causes its groove to engage with one side of the opening in the clip, and thus prevent the pin from working longitudinally and dropping out and releasing the saw-blade.
VVh-at I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw-frame, the stretcher A, formed in halves and forced apart at the center to form a truss, in combination with the brace a, having one end inserted in the trussed stretcher, forming a key therefor, and the other end secured to the frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a saw-frame, of the clips B, bent around the arms of the frame, and having the sharpened points 19 forced therein, the saw-blade, and the bolts or pins D, passed through openings made in the ends of the saw-blade, the clips, and the arms of the frame to secure the saw blade to the frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the saw-frame, the blade, and the clips encircling the arms of the frame,of the bolts or pins D,passed through openings made in the blade, the frame, and the clips, the said pins having the grooves near their outer ends to engage in the open ngs in the clips and prevent working loose, substantially as described.
