Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed August 31, 1914. Serial No. 859,581.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRIS MORGAN NHITGOMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quick-Release Hacksaw-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hack-saw frames, by which the operator can release or clamp a saw in the frame without the aid of the thumb-nut and screw, which are usually employed for that purpose, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a rigid frame; second, to construct the frame, to which a hack-saw can be secured by the simple movement of a lever and release the same with equal facility.
I attain the above objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in whichFigure 1, is a plan of my device, Fig. 9., is a side elevation showing a saw securely fastened, and Fig. 3, is a side elevation showing a saw at moment of release.
My frame is composed of the following members. bar 1, curved downward at the end abutting the handle. At the extreme lower end is secured the loop 12, and through the said loop passes the rod 13. In the front end of said rod is disposed the pin 14, adapted to hold the rear end of a saw. To the rear end of the said rod 13, is secured a handle 15, in the usual manner. Along the top of the bar 1, are provided the notches 2, for adjusting the frame, to difierent lengths of saws and the bar is offset one-half its thickness laterally, adjacent the curved portion as hereinafter explained. The bar 3, is a duplicate in form, of bar 1, and is provided with a loop 16, at the lower end thereof, through which passes the threaded rod 17. The inner end of the rod 17, is provided with the pin 18, adapted to attach to the front end of a saw. The bar 3, is oft-set one-half its thickness adjacent the curved portion thereof, similar to bar 1, but in the opposite direction, so that when the two bars 1 and 3, are placed together the loops 12 and 16, will be in longitudinal alinement with the back or upper portion of the frame. At the rear end of the bar 3, is located the keeper 4, which comprises two side plates, spaced apart a distance equal to the combined thickness of the bars 1 and 3. The side plates are connected together at the front, lower end and the rear, top end by transverse bars and on the lower, rear side of the top bar is located the depending rib 19, adapted to engage any one of the notches in the top of the frame. Said keeper 4, is secured to bar 3, of the frame by the rivets 10, but is disposed in sliding engagement on bar 1, when bar 3, is tilted downward, see Fig. 3, and holds the frame rigidly when the two bars of the frame are in horizontal alinement and the rib 19, seated in one of the grooves 2.
The yoke 5, is a loop passing under both halves of the frame and upward outside of the same, to a point a distance above the same. Between the two upwardly extending sides of the yoke is pivotally disposed a lever 8, and secured to the same by the rivet 11. The pivotal end of the lever rests on top of the bar 1, when the lever is raised as in Fig. 3, and extends backward and rests upon both halves of the frame when the frame is closed, see Fig. 2. Adjacent the rear end of the lever and from the sides thereof, depend the clips 9, disposed one each side of the frame when closed and conducing materially to the rigidity of the frame. The said yoke 5, is provided with a slot 6, in one side and through said slot passes the attaching screw 7, which loosely connects the yoke to the bar 1, of the frame.
To operate my device, when closed, raise the lever 8, as shown in Fig. 3, which will allow the frame 3, to drop downward from the fulcrum 19, and converge the lower ends of the frame, thereby releasing the saw from the pins 14, and 15. To secure a saw in the frame insert the pins 14 and 18, in the apertures in the ends of the saw and place the lever backward as shown in Fig. 2, which causes a divergence of the attaching pins 14, and 18, and secures the saw in the frame.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and my own and desire to protect by the issue of Letters Patent therefor, is
In a hack-saw frame of the class described, a back comprising two members parallel and in contact with each other for a distance then bending downward at opposite ends, a means at the lower ends of the members for attaching and holding a hacksaw blade, a means for holding the two members of the frame in slidable relation, notches in the top or back of one member,
a rib adapted to engage with any one of said notches, a yoke clasping the two members together and comprising two side plates spaced apart a distance equal to the combined thickness of the two members of the frame and extending upward a distance beyond the top of said members, a slot in said yoke extending longitudinally thereof and through the front half of said yoke, a screw secured in the front member of the frame and in slidable vertical engagement upon the top of both members of the frame when in closed position and to rest in an upright position on the forward member of the frame when in open position, depending clips adjacent the rear end of said cam lever and disposed one each side of the frame when in closed position.
