R. S. GIBSON.
BOLT AND ROD CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 6. ms.

BOLT ltll'D ROD CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed January 8,1915. Serial No. 1,060.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUrUs S. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofEast San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt and Rod Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bolt and rod cutters of the geared handle type and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a cutter of this class which is simple and economical of construction, durable, easily operated, second, to provide a cutter of this class which is very eflicient in its action, and third, to provide a cutter of this class in which the several parts may be quickly and accurately assembled.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a side view of my cutter complete, Fig. 2 is a view at right angles there to of a fragmentary portion of the cutting end of said cutter, Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 1 of a fragmentary portion of the cutting end of said cutters and Fig. 4 is a top and sectional view of the link connection with one of the handles.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The blade 1, blade 2, shanks 3 and 4, links 5, link 6 and handles 7 constitute the rincipal parts of my cutter. The handles are each provided with rounded inner ends 7 and each is provided with a plurality of teeth 7". These two handles 7 are connected in spaced relation to each other by means of a link 6 and rivets 6 The ends of said links 6 are bifurcated so that the members extend on opposite sides of the ends of the handles 7 Mounted between these ends 7 of the handles and the bifurcated link members are links 5, one on each side of the end of said handle. To the other ends of these links 5 are pivotally connected the shanks 3 and 4 at one of their ends by means of rivets 5. These ends of these shanks are ing secured to the shank 3 and the blade 2 secured to the shank i and these blades are provided with sharpened beveled edges 1 as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawing. These blades are pivotally connected together by means of the rivet 2 in the lugs l and 2 of said blades.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction,com-
bination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a bolt and rod cutter which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easily operated and very efficient; that sufficient leverage may be attained by the proportionate lengths of the shanks to the length of the handles; that by reason of the tooth action the cutting edges of the blade move toward each other in such a manner as to provide great efficiency.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bolt and rod cutter comprising a pair of handles, spaced apart from each other, each provided with rounded toothed inner ends, a pair of shanks each provided with rounded toothed ends adapted to engage with the toothed ends of said handles, links for holding said handles in certain spaced relation to each other, other links for holding said handles and said shanks in certain relative positions to each other and blades mounted on each of said shanks provided with lugs for pivotally connecting them together.
2. The combination of a pair of handles with rounded, toothed inner ends; a link and pivot bolts connecting and spacing the inner ends of the handles; a pair of bladecarrying shanks fulcrumed together at their sides andformed with" rounded, toothed inner endsengaging those of the handles and links and bolts pivotally connecting and holding engaged the ends of '5 the handles and shanks.
' I 3. The combination of a pair of handles spaced -'apart "from each otheryeach provided with rounded, toothed inner ends,-
i5 and holding engaged the endsof the handles and shanks.
I 4;. The combination of a pair of handles spaced apart from each other, each provided with rounded, toothed inner ends, a
linlgand pivot bolt'means connecting and spacing the inner ends of said handles in their spaced relation, a pair of shanks each formed with rounded toothed inner ends engaging those of the handles, a link and bolt. means PlVOtilllY connecting and holding the toothed ends of said handles and shanks in certain engaged relation to each other and cutter blades secured to said shanks pivotally connected together near 7 one end of their cutting edges.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name 111 the presence of two suhscrlbmg witnesses. v
