H. M. MYERS. MACHINE FOR SPLITTING THE TANGS 0P SHOVEL BLANKS.
No. 389,289. Patented Sept. 11, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FEICE.
HENRY M. MYERS, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR SPLITTING TH E TANGS OF SHOVEL-BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,239, dated September 11, 1888.
Application filed February 18. 1888. Serial No. 264,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Splitting the Tangs and Forming the Sockets in Shovel-Blanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to machines for splitting the tangs and forming thesoeketsin blanks for shovels, spades, and scoops, and has special reference to improvements in the machine shown in my Patent No. 348,037, dated August 24, 1886.
The invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved machine, and Fig. 2 a plan of the saddle detached from the machine.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, A represents an ordinary punching-machine having what is known as a stop-motion, and in which machine is inserted a splitting-knife or cutter, B.
0 represents a saddle detachably secured to the machine by bolts a, and between the side walls, I) 0, is formed a groove or way,in which checkpieces d e and barsf g reciprocate to clamp the blank D while the tang h is being split and the socket formed. The checkpieces and the bars are connected by bolts *5 k,
which pass through the bars, enter the checkpieces, and are secured thereto by a pin, Z, for drawing the cheek-pieces back out of contact with the blank after the tang has been split. On the bolts 2' 7c, and between the checkpieces and the bars, are springs in n for cushioning and relieving the operating-levers of excessive strain. The check-pieces are reciprocated in the saddle by levers 0 1), attached to each side of the head of the machine, and to said levers are connected links q r, forming togglelevers, as in my Patent No. 367 ,834.
(No model.)
In practice the machine may be provided with an anvil and a hammer for closing the split tang. The saddle G is provided with a while being split. To the head of the machine are secured arms E F, which are adjusted in ways on the head by screws 8 s, and in their lower ends are journaled rollers 15 t, which bear against each side of the tang of the blank and support the severed parts as the knife advances into the tang. The knife and the tang supporting arms advance together and never change their relative posi tion, while the arms are adjustable in the head of the machine to accommodate them to different thicknesses of blanks to be split. The split tang is partially closed by the arms E F and their rollers t l as the'knife is withdrawn, andthe rollers pass upward over the sides of the split tang. After the knife has been withdrawn from the tang, and the arms and their rollers released from the sides of the blank, the further upward movement of the head of the machine moves the check-pieces out of engagement with the blank, when it may be removed by a pair of tongs in the hands of an attendant.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a machine for splitting shovel-blanks, a reciprocating head provided with a knife or cutter, in combination with arms fixed but laterally adjustable in said head, and pro vided with rollers at their lower ends for supporting the tang while being split, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for splitting shovel-blanks, a reciprocating head provided with a knife or cutter and ways, in combination with tangsupporting arms attached to said head and ad justed insaid ways, and a blank-clamping device, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY M. MYERS.
