vUNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
HENRY M. MYERS, OF BEAVERFALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.'
MACHINE FOR SPLITTING THE TANGS OF SllOVEL-BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 367,833, dated August 9,1887.
Application filed March 4, 1887. Serial No. 2293,05). (No model.)
Vthe same.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for splitting the tang for the handle-` straps and forming the socket in the blanks for nlakingshovels, spades, and scoops; and it consists in the constructions hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l represents a plan view, vpartly in section; Fig. 2, a -longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig.' 1;'
Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; and. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective l showing a blank in a stirrup for supporting it.`
Reference being ha'd to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, Arepresents the bed of the machine, which is supported upon suitable legs and has a recess formed in its upper side, Vin whichV the blank-clamping and tanksupporting jaws operate.
B represents the cheek-pieces, which are adjustable vlaterally by means of screws a, and are held to the bed Aby'bolts b, which pass through the elongated apertures c, and are cushioned and held to their `proper working position by springs d.
C represents the 4longitudinallymovable blank-clamping and tang-'supporting jaws, which are provided with one straight face, c, and an inclined face, f, which latter bears `against the corresponding inclined face, g, of the cheek-pieces B. The jaws Care cushioned and returned by coiled springs It, the tension of which is regulated by a follower, z', and a screw, k. The inner ends of the jaws are cut away 4'at l to allow the metalof the tang of the blank to bend outward as the knife penetrates the tang, and form supports for the bifureated arms 4 5 of the. tang, which, when rolled out, form the handlestraps of the shovel.
D represents shovel-blanks in position ou the machine and supported in stirrups E,whicl1 the support q, and is adapted to be thrown' across the machine, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 3, with a portion vof its lower side resting upon the upper end of the blank and the end'of the lever near the handle engaging with hook or dog r. The function of this lever is to prevent the cutter from throwing the blank out of the machine when the cutter first strikes it from the under side, and to assist in holding the blank while the tang is being split.
H represents a shaft mounted in vsuitable journals on the bed A, and upon said shaft are mounted eccentric cams I I and an eccentric cutter, K.
L represents a shaft which supports a driving-pulley at one end, and a pinion, s, on the opposite end, which engages with a masterwheel, t, on, the shaft H. The shaft H also supports a balance-wheel M.
The several'parts being constructed suba stantially as described, the operation is as follows: The blanks D are heated and placed in positionin the machine and power applied to the driving-pulley. -The shaft H as it revolves brings the cutter Kin contact with the tang, splittingit down to and sufficiently beyond the root of the tang to form the socket and the handle-straps. The cams I I at the same time operate the tang-,supporting and blank-clamping-jaws C by moving them out fromV the shaft H as the cutter K advances into the tang. The cutaway portions Z of the jaws supportthe arms 45 of the tang and prevent the cutter from running off to one side or the other of the tang, thus securing a uniform thickness of the handlestraps. \Vhile the tang of one blank is being cut the jaws on the opposite end of the machine are being thrown toward the shaft Hv by the springs h and the blank re leased, when it is'removed by the operator.
ICO
Instead of returning the jaws C by means of the springs h, they may be connected by a yoke engaging both jaws in the same plane, and also engaging the cam I, thus producing a positive movement of the jaws in both directions.
I'Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a machine for splitting shovel-blanks, a revolving cutter for splitting the tang, in combination with reciprocating jaws for clamping or holding the blank and supporting the tang laterally while being split, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for splitting shovel-blanks, a cutter ecccntrically mounted upon a shaft, in combination with reci procatin g jaws for clam ping or holding the blank and supporting the tang laterally while being split, and an eccentric cam for operating said jaws, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for splitting the tang of shovel-b1anks,a cutter mounted upon a shaft, reciprocating jaws for clamping or holding the blank and supporting the tang laterallyr while being split, and means for moving the jaws, in combination with cheek-pieces, substantially as described.
4. In a machine for splitting the tang of shovel-blanks, the combination of a cutter mounted upon a shaft, a stirrup for supporting the blank, reciprocating jaws for clamping the blank and supporting the tang laterally wllile being split, and suitable means for operating said jaws, substantially as described.
5. In a machine for splitting the talig oi" shovel-blanks, a cutter mounted eccentricall y upon a shaft, and suitable means for revolving the same, substantially as dcscri bed.
G. In a machine for splitting the tang of shovel-blanks,a stirrup for supportingablank, provided with an adjustable follower, in combination with a lever for holding said blank, substantially as described..
In testimonywhcrcof Iafix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
