IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-GUMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,200, dated August 18, 1874; application filed August 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. VOSBURGH, of Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Gummer and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a saw-gummer, as will be herein after more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of my saw gummer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof through the line a 00, .Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views of certain parts thereof.
A represents the bed of my machine, at the rear end of which are upward-projecting slotted ears on a, one on each side, the slots in said ears extending below the upper surface of the bed, and a corresponding groove made in the bed, as shown. B represents the top piece of the machine, made of the same general form as the bed A, and placed on top thereof, its front end being elevated by means of a spring, 0, placed in suitable recesses in the adjoining surfaces of the bed and top piece, as shown in Fig. 2. In the under side of the top piece B, near the rear end, is made a V- shaped groove corresponding with the groove in the bed A. In the groove on the bed, and passing through the slots in the ears a, is placed awedge-shaped bar, D, the upper edge of which is made V- shaped. or as a knifeedge, and the groove in the top piece B is placed over said edge, the two parts A and B being held together at their rear ends by a spring, E.
It will readily be seen that by moving the wedge-bar D out or in, the distance between the parts A and B at their rear ends is increased or diminished, as may be necessary in the proper working of the machine.
The groove in the bed A is inclined, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the upper or knife edge of the wedge D will at all timesbe horizontal.
On each side of the top piece B is pivoted a plate, G, which is provided with a slot, .00, as
shown in Fig. 3, to pass over a bolt, 3/. The I lower front end of the plate G is beveled to pass in on the inner side of a guiding-ear, b, on the bed A. Either plate G may be raised up from the bolt 3 and lowered again on the outside of a nut, z, placed on said bolt, so that the end of the plate will come on the outside of the ear I). By this means a slight lateral adjustment of the top piece B is obtained. In the front end of the bed A is inserted the stationary die H, and on each side thereof is an adjustable guide, I, to regulate the distance the saw is to enter. Through the bed A, from the under side upward, passes a bolt, J, which passes up through the top piece B, and is above the same provided with two nuts, d and d. In the front end of the top piece is a suitable aperture, 6, for the insertion of the die f, which is formed on the lower end of a bar, K, and passes through a die-plate, H, inserted in the under surface of the top piece B, at the front end. On the bar K is attached an adjustable fork or stirrup, L, as shown in Fig. 5.
Inthe operation of this machine, a wrench, P, and a lever, B, are used. The wrench P is made with handles, extending in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. l, and is placed around the lower nut, d. The rear end of the lever B is forked, and straddles the bar K above the stirrup L, and then straddles the bolt J between the nuts 01 d. The front end of the lever B is connected with a treadle, S, for operating the same.
The various parts having been properly adjusted, the saw is inserted up to the guides I I. By means of the treadle S, the lever B is brought down, which forces the die fdownward. At the same time, by means of the wrench P, the top piece B is brought down, so that the saw will be held firmly by the dies H H, while the die f gums the tooth. By a reverse motion of the wrench the top piece B is allowed to be raised by the spring 0, and the die f rises therewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the bed A and top piece B, grooved as described, of the wedge bar D having a knife-edge along its upper edge, and the spring E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The slotted plates G G, pivoted 0n the top piece B, in combination with the bolts y and nuts 2, and the ears b on the bed. A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the bed A and top piece B, of the wedge-bar 1), spring E, bolt J and nut d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of the die-bar K, stirrup L, forked lever B, and. nut d on the bolt J substantially as shown and described.
