SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-3l4,384, dated March 24, 1885. Application filed July 10, 18E-i. (o model.)
To arZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, VILLIAM F. Knosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and I1nproved Machine for Shaving Printers Leads, Sings, and Furniture; and I hereby declarey the following to be a full` clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine by means of which the above-named articles may be automatically reduced in thickness and width by shaving, and 'with great rapidity and exactness, to. any desired size, and without danger of breakage to the article in the operation.
To this end my invention consists in a machine operating by friction to force or draw the said articles moving within aV recess, in which they are confined laterally and upon their surfaces, between knives.
illy invention also consists in a device to be attached to the shaving-machine by means of which the said articles may be fed to the niachine automatically; and my invention still further consists in the construction and combination of the parts by means of which the purpose of the machine is e'fectually accomplished.

A is a table upon which the machine is supported.
B is the bed of the machine, secured upon the table A and provided with a longitudinal central recess, t.
C is a sliding block provided on its under side vwith atongue, i', forming its guide, which fits within the recess t, and on its upper side with an upwardprojecting tongue, t2, broadest at its base, and tapering upward through out part of its extent, the remainderof which has vertical sides.
D is au oblong block or casting of dimensions coinciding with the bed B of' the machine and resting upon the latter. The under side ofthe block D is cut out to leave the space s of a height corresponding with that of the sliding block C, to receive the latter and permit it to reciproca-te within the space s, and the upper side is cut or cast to produce the transverse zigzag forni shown in Fig. 3. A longitudinal slot, i, of the form of the tongue t2, and of dimensions to admit the latter within it and produce a snug fit, is provided in the part D.
E is a flat oblong block or casting of dimensions corresponding with those of the block D, and having its under side formed to coincide partly with the shape of the upper surface of the part D, but having a longitudinal recess, m', formed underneath it to receive the plate E', by means of which the recess m is adjusted, and provided at one end with an upward projection, r, to receive a set-screw, q, the purpose ofwhich will hereinafter be explained. The block E is provided longitudinally `with a slot, p, like the slot t3 in the part l), to ad mit the tongue p2 oi" the sliding grip-block F, reciprocating upon the top surface of the part E, the tongue 1r resembling in appearance the tongue t2 on the block D, though differing from the latter in its construction. The narrower and lower part of the tongue p2, having the vertical sides, instead of forming a part or eX- tension of the tongue, as is the case with the tongue t2, is inserted into an opening formed to receive it in the part of the said tongue having the oblique sides, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and contains toward its npper extremity two balls, o, one -formed upon the end of each of the set-screws a, and lying'A 9 each within a recess formed to receive it in thev upper side of the narrow portion of the tongue p2, the arrangement being such that the por` tion last referred to of the tongue p2 may be raised and lowered by turning the'set-screws a plate, j, preferably of the form clearly shownl in Fig. l of the drawings, which platej is rmly secured to the sliding block C.
K and K are knives, the one K projecting obliquely downward and forward through an opening provided through the part E, andthe other projecting upward to cause its edge to meet that of the knife K at the recess m, as
shown, through the parts underneath the part E.
K2 and K3 are the side knives.
The operation of the parts thus far described is as follows: The sliding blocks F and C being in a position somewhat farther toward the left-hand end of the machine than is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, so far that the block C will abut against the end of the slot s, the links Z, joining the two blocks, will have been caused, by vthe mechanism hereinafter described, in the backward movement of the blocks, to assume vertical positions, and the device will be ready to operate upon the article to be shaved,which is inserted into therecess m from the end of the machine far enough to cause part of it to lie between the tonguesu t and p2 of the blocks C and F. The wheel G, revolving in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. l,will, through the medium of theintervening mechanism already described,
cause the blocks C and F to move toward the knives; but the pitman I being connected dire'ctly only with the block. C and not'with the block F, the block C will be moved forward slightly in advance of the 'block F, causing the links to'assume an oblique position, whereby-the article operated upon will be firmly pressed by the tongue p2 against the upper surface of the tongue t2, and moved forward by the friction produced until its forward end reaches the knives, the length of the pitinans stroke being sufficient to bring the article to the knives but not between them.
As will hereinafter be seen, the first article to be shaved, just referred to, is driven between the knives by being push ed by the next article which is inserted into the recess m, and carried or pulled forward in the manner described of the first article, when the blocks C and Fshall have been returned to their position at' the end ofthe machine necessary to enable them to perform the operation. When the blocks O and F shall have brought the article to be shaved to the position before the knives just described,I it is necessary that theyshallbe returned, leaving such article' in its position, to cause them to do which they must be relieved from their `frictional contact with it. This is effected by the mechanism of which the following is a description:
L is a rod or bar secured to the vertical platesf2 and lying along the edge of the table. A reciprocating plate, 7i, is secured upon the bar L, and is connected with the platej by means of pivoted links lz', h2, and It. The link h2, which forms the connection between the upper corner of the platej and the plate h by its pivotal connection with the link h', has an extension, h4, forming an angle with it andy projecting upward from the pivotal point ofthe link h2, the end of which extension is forked to receive a pivot, x, in the side of the block F. d
On the rear surface ofthe wheel G a cam, G', is produced by forming the recess g. (Shown in dotted linesin Fig. l.) A lever, M, pivoted toward its center to one edge of the table,com municates at one end with the cam by means of a roller, fz, moving within the recess g. and at its opposite end it is pivoted to the lever N, formed, for the sake of convenience, in two parts, z andz. 0n the under side of the table blocks O and O are secured transversely, to provide bearings for the rods f, supported within longitudinaL recesses formed on their lower surfaces by the plates f, bolted to the said blocks'. Angular links f are pivoted each at one end to the part z of the lever N, and at their opposite ends each to one end of a plate, f2, of which there are two. each secured to the rod or bar L, and passing upward through guidesf3 on the blocks O and O'. It should here be stated that the links Zlz/ li'l /ra f', plates j and h, rod or bar L, and parts f2, f3, and f* are also provided and arranged to operate in the manner shown on the side of the machine presented to view in Fig. l on its opposite side, and that the pitmanIis forked at about the point x', the prong (not shown) extending to and being connected with a plate, j, in the manner shown of the prong represented in the said figure.
The operation of the mechanism just de' scribed is as follows: When the sliding blocks F and C shall have been drawn in the direct-ion toward the wheel G as far as the stroke of the pitinau I will permit, the narrowed portion g of the recess g around the cam G will have:` come into contact with the roller y, causing the end of the lever M opposite the roller gto be thrown in the direction corresponding with that of the wheels motion, whereby the lever N will be forced in the same direction, causing the bell-cran k levers or links f to raise the rod or bar L, and withv it the plate It, with which the sliding block Fis connected by the pivoted links h and h2, and by means of the forked end of the latter operating against the pivotxin the block F, which it surrounds, the blockF is moved to cause the links Z to assume vertical positions. the blocks C and F slide back to the opposite end ofthe machine, by which time the point g2 ofthe recess g will be in contact with the roller y, when the lever M will be moved in the direction opposite to that just described, pulling the vrod or barL downward and setting the linksZ in oblique positions, for the purpose already described. The knife K. is rmly secured in its oblique position by means of a screw, e, passing through a slot in its shank and into the material ofthe part E, and is thereby rendered adjustable upon the saine angle to permit it to be raised and lowered to act upon leads or other articles to be shaved of different thick nesses by means of the set-screw mechanism acting within the lug e. The knife K'is adjusted by means of the set-screw e3 and the finger e4, pivoted toward one end to the part D, and having an annular head, e5, forming aunt, in which the screw e3 turns. By means ofthe screw e', screw e, and linger e4 the knives K and K are held firmly in their positions. The curved dotted lines d and d represent recesses leading from the edges of the knives K and K to the upper and lower surfaces of the machine, through which recesses the shavings from the leads may be automatically removed. The knives K2 and K3 are inserted obliquely into openings formed to receive them-one in each side ofthe machine. The cutting-edges of the side knives are arranged one at each side of the recess m, as shown in Fig. 6, to lie slightly forward of the cuttingedges of the knives K and K, for the reason that the side knives leave ragged edges upon each side of the lead or other article being shaved, which, owing to the position of the knivesK and K', are removed by these latter. rlhe form of the side knives is preferably that shown in Fig. 6, whereby they may be rendered laterally adj ustable with relation to the recess m by means of screws la', or set-screws working in openings provided to admit them in the vertical portions la of the said knives and entering the side of the device. Their vertical adjustment is effected through the medium of a rod, lf?, shown in Fig. 7 as inserted vertically into an opening in the machine from the top and bent toward. one extremity. The bent end lies underneath the shank of the knife, which is lowered and raised by means of the nut k3 working upon the screw-thread formed upon the Lipper portion of the rod k2. Like the knives, the recess m is necessarily adjustable, as shown in Fig. 3, in height as well as in width, to admit the leads and other articles of different dimensions. The height of the recess m is adjustable by means ofthe set-screws g, g', and g, (shown in Fig. 1,) the first of which has liereinbefore been described, the second operating within a slot, Q5, through a plaie, c,.serving to connect the parts E and D together, and the third operating in a slot, g4, through a plate, c', also serving to connect the parts E and D together. The Width of the slot is regulated, as hereinbefore stated, by means of the plate E in the recess m. The vertical set-screws mi, operating in elongated openings, serve to raise and lower the plate E when theheight of the recess m is regulated by raising and lowering the casting E, as hereinbefore described, and horizontal setscrews m3 serve to move the plate E forward and backward in the recess in to adjust the width of the recess m for leads and the other articles referred to of varying widths. ltl `should here be stated that the limits within which the adjustable features hereinbefore described require t-o be adjusted to regulate the width of the recess in are very narrow, never exceeding, at the very outside, about an eighth of an inch.
' As hereinbefore described, the foremost lead or other article to be shaved is pushed between the knives by the article whichfollows it. These articles may be fed to the machine by hand or automatically,and for the latter operation Ihave provided an automatic feeding device, (shown as attached to theend of the machine in Fig. 2 of the drawings@ of which the following is a description.

Q is a bar secured at one end to the end of the tongue t of the sliding block C, ofalength corresponding with that of the stroke of the pitman I. The bottom of the box l), which is on a level with the lower side of the recess m, is provided with a central slot, af, eXte'nding along its whole length, through which a nger, a, secured upon the rear end ofthe bar Q, projects. As the sliding block is moved forward, and with it the bar Q, the 'finger a will move the lowest lead or other article into the recess m, and continue the operation as the block C is reciprocated, thus feeding the machine automatically. 1
The position of the knives might'be arranged toward the end 0f the machine opposite to that at which they are shown, in which case the leads would be drawn instead of being pushed between them, and this arrangement is included in my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for shaving printers leads, slugs, and furniture, having a recess, m, to receive and confine the articles to be shaved. and having knives operating to shave the said articles when passed between them., in com- `bination with clamping mechanism for moving the said articles forward within the recess m, and mechanism for reciprocating the said clamping mechanism, all substantially as described.
2. A machine for shaving printers leads, slugs, and furniture, having a recess, m, to receive and confine the said articles to be shaved, and having knives arranged toward one end of the said recess to shave the said articles when passed between them, clamping IIO IIS
mechanism operating to carry the said articles inthe said recess m toward the said knives, and reciprocating mechanism operating to move the said clamping mechanism back toward the inlet of the recess m after the said clamping mechanism shall have carried one of the said articles in a position before the knives, and to cause thesaid clamping mechanism to draw another article within the recess m, by means of the impingement of which against the first-named article the latter shall be forced between the knives, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. A machine for shaving printers7 leads. duc., comprising, in combination, the following elements, viz: a bed, B, provided with a longitudinal recess, t, on its upper side, a clamping-block, C, provided on its under side with a tongue, t', fitting within the recess t, and

vand hollowed out on its underside to produce the recess s, to receive the clamping-block C,
f and providedy with a longitudinal slot, t, to
receive the tongue t of the clamping-block C, a block, E, above the block D and adjustably connected with the same, and provided on its lower sidewith a recess, m, and with a longitudinal slot,p3, a clamping-block, F, upon the part E, and provided on its lower side with an adjustable tongue, p2, within the slot p3, adjustable knives K, K', K2, and K3, having their cutting-edges arranged with relation to each other and to the recess m, as described, to
shave the said printers articles when passed between them, and mechanism operating to reciprocate the said clamping-blocks G and F, to carry the said articles along the recess m and passthem between the knives, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a machine for shaving printers leads, Src., the combination, with the clampingblocks C and F, of mechanism to reciprocate the said blocks and cause them to clamp the object to be shaved inits forward motion within the recess m, said mechanism comprising the following elements, viz: a wheel, G, provided with means for revolving it, a plate, j, secured to the clamping-block C and'connected with the wheel G, a cam G", formed upon one face of the wheel G, pivoted links Z, connecting the clamping-blocks C and F, and mechanism connecting the cam G and the plate j, whereby the clamping-block C is eaused to move forward in advance of the clampingblock F, and whereby the said clamping blocks C and F are returned with the links Z in a vertical position, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with a machine for shaving printers leads, 85e., provided with a recess, m, to receive and confine the articles to be shaved, and having knives operating to vshave the said articles when passed between them, and clamping mechanism for moving the said articles forward within the recess m, and mechanism for reciprocating the said clamping mechanism, of means for feeding the said articles automatically to the said machine, all substantially as described.
6. Ina machine for shaving printers7 leads, &c., the combination, with the tongue t of the clamping-block C, of a rod or bar, Q, re.- `ciprocating with the said tongue t, having a finger, a, toward one end, and a box, P, supported upon the said machine and to contain the articles to be shaved, and provided with a longitudinal slot, a', through which the finger.
