Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed June 12, 1914, Serial No. 844,802. Renewed August 31, 1915. Serial No. 48,348.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. STOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rexburg, in the county of Madison, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoof-Trimmers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in farriers tools, particularly to devices for trimming horses hoofs, and has for its object the provision of a novel trimmer of this character which is so constructed that a powerful leverage may be exerted upon the cutting blades.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that the same degree of leverage upon the cutting jaws is exerted at any point of opening of the jaws.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which will be rigid in construction and positive in operation.
Other objects and advantages such as simplicity, cheapness in manufacture, durability and the general improvement of the art will be carefully brought out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device in its closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in their open position, and parts broken away to more clearly show the construction and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numerals 5 and 6 represent the jaws of my device as a whole, which comprise arms 7 and cutting blades 8. The jaws 5 and 6 are connected by means of links 9 which are pivotally connected with the jaws, as by bolts or rivets 10. The aws 5 and 6 are provided adjacent the bolts 10 with segmental gear portions 11 which intermesh and not only insure the movement of the jaws in unison but also give greater strength.
In order that the jaws 5 and 6 may be moved, I provide levers 12 which terminate in handles 13 at one end and are provided upon their other ends with heads 14 pivotally connected with the arms 7, as shown at 15. The heads 14 are provided with segmental gear faces 16 wherebyunison of movement is secured. In order that the levers 12 may be properly connected and the gear faces 16 be properly intermeshed, I provide the heads 14 with lugs 17 to which are connected links 18, by bolts or the like 19, which form the centers about which the heads 14 rotate when the levers 12 are moved.
The jaws 5 and 6 being separated, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be observed that movement of the levers 12 toward each other will rock the.
From the foregoing description and a study of the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a device for trimming horses hoofs or for other purposes which will be simple, eficient and powerful.
It will be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction shown as by slight changes I may adapt the device for use for many purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A hoof trimming device comprising a pair of lever arms, intermeshing segmental gears formed on one end thereof, trans-verse bars extending across said gears and having said levers pivoted thereon, a pair of jaws pivoted upon the ends of said segmental gears and provided with cutting edges, in-
termeshing segmental gears formed on the across said segmental gears for holding them In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in intermeshing position, a pair of jaws in the presence of two Witnesses. v
pivoted upon the ends of said segmental 1 l 3 gears and provided upon their other ends EDWARD STOWELL' with cutting edges, and transverse bars Witnesses:
pivoted upon said jaws for holding them HIGGINS,
in their proper eoacting position. E. RIoKs.
