UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BERNARD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WILLIAM SCHOLLHORN COMPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- NECTICUT.
PLIERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM A. BERNARD, of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers and Similar Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
This invention relates to pliers, punches and similar tools, and consists in the production of a simple and efiicient form of plier having the jaws and operating levers formed hollow. In addition a simple and effetive connection between the operating levers and the jaws is provided, together with other novel improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of cutting pliers embodying the invention, Fig. 2, a longitudinal, central vertical section through the pliers, Fig. 3, a similar view with the jaws shown open, Fig. 4., a top view of the pliers, as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section through one of the operating levers and jaws on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, Fig. 6, a front view of one of the operating levers, Fig. 7, a view of a blank from which one of the jaws is formed, and Fig. 8, a view of the blank from which one of the handles is made.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
In the drawings, the parts designated by the letters A and B represent hollow sheet metal handles or operating levers of the form shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 427,220, granted to me May 6, 1890. Ihese lever handles are provided with forwardly projecting parallel plates a and Z), which are pivoted together by a common fulcrum pin 0. Between the plates 7) of the handle B is pivotally mounted at D a jaw I) and between the plates (4 of the handle A a jaw F is similarly pivotally mounted at G. These jaws are shown formed of sheet metal from a blank substantially like that indicated in Fig. 7. The metal is bent along the dotted lines h (Fig. 7 so that the portion I forms the operating surface of the jaw, and the parts J the strengthening edge flanges or supports. These flanges J project backward forming rearward tines to the jaw which is thereby provided with a central Specification of Letters Patent.

longitudinal slot K. A cutting blade L is seated etween the flanges J on the back of the operating face I of the jaw E and is secured in place by a rivet M. A cooperating cutting blade N is mounted within the slot K and is pivoted therein by means of the pin D. This blade is provided with a further perforation for the fulcrum pin C of the tool so that when the blade N is assembled it will be held rigidly within the forwardly projecting plates 6 of the handle B.
The rearwardly extending tines J of the jaws project into the hollow interior of the handle levers. The handle levers are provided with integral tongues 0 formed out of the blank between the forward plates, as shown more particularly in Fig. 8. The tongues O are formed T shaped, with oppositely disposed lugs or shoulders R. The tongues are bent on the transverse dotted line S (Fig. 8) and therefore depend downward between the plates at and Z) (Figs. 2 and 3) at the forward edge T of the handle levers. The rearward tines J of each jaw are adapted to be supported by the shoulders R of the tongue 0 as the tongue extends downward in the slot K of the jaw. The jaw is adapted to slide between the shoulders R and the edge T of the handle levers. By this means, the rear ends of the jaws are adapted to be supported by integral portions of the handle levers and as the handle levers are opened or closed, the jaws are opened and closed, so that their operating surfaces will be parallel to each other continuously.
The cutting blade L moves with the jaw E, but the blade N being rigidly connected to the handle lever B rotates with this lever on the pivot pin D, so that as the jaws are opened, the cutting blades L and N are separated and vice versa.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In pliers and similar tools, the combination with operating levers; of jaws actuated thereby, one of said jaws having a sliding connection with one of said levers; and a member depending from the outer face of said lever engaging said jaw to support it in its sliding movement, substantially as described.
2. In pliers and similar tools, the combination with operating levers; of jaws actuated thereby, one of said aws being slotted longitudinally in the plane of the tool; and a depending member projecting through said slot to support said jaw in its m0ve meut substantially as described.
3. In pliers and similar tools the combi nation with operating levers; of jaws actuated thereby one of said aws being slotted loi'igitudinally and one of said levers having an integral portion adapted to take into said slot and support said jaw in its movement, substantially as described.
4,. In pliers and similar tools, the con1bination with operating levers; of jaws actuated thereby, one of said aws having a plurality of rearwardly extending parallel plates and one of said levers having a plurality of slots formed by a depending portion, said plates sliding within said slots adjacent to the sides of said lever substantially as described.
for pliers and similar tools formed of sheet M metal bent along a longitudinal line; of a plurality of forwardly extenthng parallel plates; and a tongue depending from the central portion of said handle between said side plates substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand on the 20th day of May, 1909.
