SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,156, dated October 1] 1892.

Be it known that I, JOHN W. KOONCE, of Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Oarolina,haveinvented certain new and nsefulImprovements in a Combined Rake and Broom; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to improvements in brooms, and especially to that kindused for sweeping lawns, yards, &o., and has for its object to combine with the broom a rake, adapting the device to be used for the purpose of sweeping or raking, as desired; and the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out particularly in the claims at the close of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of thedevice. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 a face view.

Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.

The letter A indicates the head of the broom,'of wood or other suitable material and of any preferred shape. To one face of the head is secured a block B, extending across the head with its lower face flush with the end of the head. This block is covered with a protecting-strip of metal, the ends of the strip being carried up and secured to the sides of the head. This block aifords a sufficiently-large surface for the reception of the broom-wires and rake-teeth, as will hereinafter appear.

0 are the rake-teeth, driven or otherwise secured in the block B, the teeth being preferably made of stout wire and inclined slightly toward the lower end of the device, as shown.

Extending over the end of the head and secured to each side thereof is a metal plate v D, a space being left between the end of the head and the metal plate, as shown. Through this plate the broom-wires pass and are socured in the head,the wires being preferably arranged in diagonal or staggered rows. The wires, it will be seen, are thus supported at two points-namely, in the head and where they pass through the metal plateby which construction not only will they be held more stiffly and firmly in position,but they will be less liable to be bent at too sharp an angle when using the device and broken or bent out of shape, as will be readily understood.

It will be noted that the handle of the device is attached to the head at an angle thereto which While not interfering with its use as a broom enables it to be handled more conveniently when used as a rake.

From the above description the construction and manner of using the device will be understood.

The device is simple, easily and cheaply made, and will be found to be well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a device of the character specified, the combination, with the head and the wires secured therein, of the metal plate extending over the end of the head, through which the wires pass, the body of said plate through which the wires pass being slightly removed from the head, leaving a space between the head and plate, whereby sharp bends in the wires are prevented, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character specified, the combination, with the head and the wires located in the head thereof, of the rake-teeth in one face of the head, projecting at an angle to the broom-wires, substantially as described.
