Description

(No Model.)
J. F. BIGELOW. WIRE BRUsH;
No. 532,259.' Patented Jan. 8, 1 895.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ JULIAN F. BIGELOW, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WIRE BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,259, dated January 8, 1895. Application filed September 28, 1894. $erial No. 524,361 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN F. BIGELO'W, of WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vire Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a brush composed of fine wire bristles attached to a suitable handle and adapted particularly for use in killing insects.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of a brush of this class whereby its wire bristles may be readily and securely attached to the handle and held in a series-of separated tufts which will permit the brush to pass quickly through the air for the purpose of striking insects without displacing the air before it sufficiently to blow the insects away.
The invention consists in the improved construction which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a side view of a wire brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. represents a section on line 44 of Fig. 1.
The same letters and numerals of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention, I take a series of fine wires, preferably of steel, and form the sameinto a bunch,the members or strands of which are parallel, and then bend the bunch at the middle of its length, thus'forming a neck 2 and twoparallel bunches 5 5 of wires connected by the neck. I then insert the neck 2 and bunches 5 5 in a sheet metal ferrule a which is suitably secured to one end of a handle I). The ferrule is of sufficient length to receive the neck 2 and a considerable length of the wires composing the bunches 5 5, and is engaged with the neck and bunches by being compressed thereon, the sides of the ferrule at opposite points being pressed inwardlyIto cause them: to bear closely upon the surfaces of the bunches 5 5. I prefer in compressing the ferrule, to form indentations a. a therein, said indentations entering the depressions between the bunches 5 5 and terminating at the neck 2, so that the lower ends of said indentations form shoulders bearing upon the neck, thus efiectually preventing the removal of the wires from the ferrule, such removal being additionally prevented by the compression or crowding together of the wires caused by the compression of the ferrule.
The portions of the wires that project from the ferrule constitute flexible bristles 6 which are arranged in separated tufts, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by means of a ligature 0 composed of a cord or wire or other flexible device, whichis interwoven with the tufts of bristles in such manner as to separate them in the manner shown and form air spaces between the tufts, the bristles being thus caused to diverge and form a fan-shaped brush composed of a flat series or row of separated tufts, so that when the brush is impelled through the air in the act of striking an insect on a wall or other surface, the air will not be forced ahead of the brush sufficiently to drive away the insect, but will pass through the brush freely, thus decreasing the liability of the escape of ths insect.
' I claim- A brush composed of a series of bentwires comprising the neck-portion 2, the parallel bunches 5 5 composed of strands extending from the neck, and the diverging bristles 6 constituting continuations of said strands; a ligature holding said bristles in a fiat series of separated tufts; an operating handle; and aferrule which receives and is compressed upon the neck and bunches 5.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of September, A. D. 1894..
