FILE-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed. July 22, 1914. Serial No. 852,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK I'TOFFMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in File-Handles, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a handle for use upon wood and metal files whereby the use of such instruments will be rendered less laborious and more accurate than is ordinarily the case.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a handle which is adapted to be mounted upon a file of ordinary construction in engagement with the same adjacent to its opposite ends, in order that even pressure may be exerted upon the file throughout its entire area.
A further object is to provide a handle of this character which has means by which it may be connected readily and quickly to a file in a secure manner, and which will not project beneath the lower, active surface of the file when in use in order that the opera tion of the same will not be obstructed.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which: 7
Figure l is a side elevation of a file having the handle applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1;
and, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the file and is also tapered longitudinally so that it will fit snugly upon the shank. The base of the handle is to be applied to the shank of the file by moving the same longitudinally thereon toward the body of the file. During this operation, the acute edges 6 of the base slot will grip the shank securely and may even cut into the same, whereby the handle will be secured against detachment by vertical movement alone. The forward end 7 of the handle is adapted to bear upon the opposite end of the file and is provided with a knob 8 by which this end of the handle may be grasped with one hand, while the body portion of the same is grasped with the other in order that the file may be operated smoothly and with even pressure along the surfaces to be filed.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the kind described,in combination, a flat'file, a tapering shank formed thereupon, a detachable handle for said file consisting of argoose-neck body, the base portion of said handle being laterally enlarged whereby to make it of uniform width with said file, said handle being formed medially with a-. shank engaging portion,
said shank en aging portion consisting of a f horizontal base disposed parallel with said file and having integral downwardly con verging sides formed in a plane with the bot; tom of the handle whereby to form sharp corner edges, said shank being rectangular in cross section, said handle adapted to engage with its base against one side of said shank and with its sharp edges against opposite sides of said shank but being spaced above the remaining side thereof, said shank engaging portion being tapered to the configuration of the shank whereby to be wedged against the same.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
