CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application iiled May 25, 1915. Serial No. 30,421.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. ARBANA- SIN, now citizen of the United States, residing at Truckee, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention contemplates the provision of an implement wherein a number of tools are combined in one, and has particular reference to a can and bottle opener.
The primary object of the'invention resides in the provision of a novel construction of a' device of this character, which is cheap to manufacture, durable and eflicient in its purpose.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the various tools extended. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the tools folded within the handle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom planyiew. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line a-'-a of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line b-b of Fig.3.
The device forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a single. length of material bent upon itself to provide a loop or handle 5 and parallel branches 6 and 7 respectively, the former being formed at its free end to provide a right angularly disposed flange 8 constituting a bottle cap remover, the flange having an opening 9 therein of suitable configuration, one edge of which is adapted to engage beneath the cap to remove the same from the bottle in the ordinary and well known manner. The branch 7 projects a suitable distance forwardly of the flange 8 being bifurcated as at 10, the separated portions 11 being curved defining a nail or tack extractor. The parscriptlon the nature and advantages of the allel branches 6 and 7 respectively are closely associated, being spaced but a slight distance by means of a cutting element interposed therebetween and riveted thereto. The cutting element comprises a strip of material 12, having an angular portion 13 sharpened and providing a cutting blade, the latter being disposed slightly in advance of and in parallelism with the flange 8. The forwardly projecting portion 14 of the branch 7 provides a fulcrum for the tool, when the latter is used in the capacity of a can opener, at which time the projecting portlon 14 is arranged to bear upon the top of the can, forming a fulcrum and thereby facilitating the penetration of the top with the blade 13, and relieving the latter of undue vertical pressure during the cutting operation whereby the top of the can may be readily severed and removed. When the top is only partly severed from the walls of the can, the forwardly projectmg portion 14 of the branch 7 is placed beneath the top and used as a lever to lift or bend the top upwardly to permit access to be had to the can.
Secured to one side of the projecting portion 14 of the branch 7 is a longitudinally disposed cutting blade 15 overhanging the slot 16 in the branch 7 to permit the device to be used in the capacity of a potato or fruit peeler.
Pivoted between the parallel branches 6 and 7 respectively, is a screw driver 17 adapted to be swung outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, while pivoted between said members at the opposite sides, thereof is a cork screw 18 adapted to be swung outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, when their use is desired, both the screw driver 17 and the cork screw 18 being adapted to be folded within the handle 5 when not in use. The branch of the handle is formed with suitable depressions indicated at 19 wnich engage the screw driver 17 and the cork screw 18 when the latter are folded within the handle, to prevent casual derangement of the parts. Fitted within the looped end of the handle is a block of iron or other suitable material indicated at 20, constituting a hammer head, it being understood that the device may be used as a hammer, when use of the tool in this capacity is found necessary.
It is believed that from the foregoing deinvention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted.
hat is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising a single length of metal bent upon itself to provide a handle and parallel closely associated branches, a right-angularly disposed flange on the end of one of said branches, and a cutting element disposed in advance of and in parallelism with said flange.
2. A device of the character described comprising a single length of metal bent upon itself to provide a handle and parallel closely associated branches, a right-angularly disposed flange onthe end of one of said branches, and a cutting element secured between both branches and having an angular portion extending in parallelism with relation to the flange and spaced therefrom. I
8. A device of the character described comprising a single length of metal bent 15 upon itself to provide a handle and parallel closely associated branches; one of said branches projecting forwardly beyond the other of said branches and having a longitudinally disposed slot, and a blade secured 20 to said branch and overhanging said slot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
