coMBmn'rIoN-roon Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10. 1 91 3.
Application filed February 20, 1918. 4 Serial No. 218,267.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. PARRELLA, a citizen of the United States, .residing at WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination tool and more particularly to a tool of this nature adapted for use about the kitchen. As this description proceeds it will be seen that the tool comprises a needle thread puller, a corkscrew, a wrench, a screwdriver, tack puller and scraper, a shoe fastener and hanger, a bottle opener, a remover for the tops of milk bottles, a can opener, a nail puller, a hammer and a wire and twine cutter. It will also be noted that these instrumentalities have been combined in a novel, simple and compact manner and in such away that certain of the instruments eotiperate with other of the instruments in carrying out their several functions.
In the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool conistructed in accordance with the invention an Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section upon line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the Referring to the drawing it-will be seen that my improved combination tool comprises a handle consisting of sides 5 and 6 which are bent together at their opposite ends and are secured to each other by rivets or like fastening devices 7 and 8. One end of the side 6 is extended beyond the rivet 7 to form an angular end 6' and the corresponding end of the side 5 is continued forwardly and is provided with an angular end 10 which together with end 6 constitutes a fulcrum in the use of a cutting blade 8 which is secured between the sides 5 and 6 by the rivets 7. The cutting edge of this blade is arranged in a plane below the fulcrum members 6 and 10. Secured to the inner face of the side 6, for pivotal movement, is a prong 11 having a barbed end 12 to adapt it to act as a thread puller so that it may be used after the manner'of 'a needle to draw a thread through any desired arti cle. This prong 11 is adapted to fold down between the sides 5 and 6. A cork screw 13 is pivoted at 14. to the inner face of the drawing.
side 5 and is likewise adapted to fold down between the sides 5 and 6. A prong 15 is pivoted at 16 to the inner face of the side 6 so that it may be moved upwardly between the sides 5 and 6 or may be swung downwardly to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, its downward movement being limited by a lug 17 which is struck inwardly from the side 6 and which limits the movement of the prong 15 to a position where it lies at an acute angle with the lower edge of the handle. Thus by imparting longitudinal movement to the handle the prong 15 will be caused to enter the usual paper caps of mllk bottles and act as a means by which said caps may be easily lifted from such bottles.
One edge of the side 5 is provided with a V shaped notch 18, the edges of which are provided with teeth 19 to adapt this notched portion to act as an alligator wrench. The lower edge of the side 6 is cut away as at 20 to provide a forwardly projecting prong, 21, adapted to be utilized as a remover for the metallic caps of bottles containing beer, soft drinks, catsup and many other commodities. In short this element of the device is adapted to remove any of the crimped metal caps commonly employed for the above named and other purposes.
The side 6 is continued beyond the rivet 8 to form a portion 22 adapted to act as a screw driver, a tack puller and scraper. One end of the side 5 is provided with'a V shaped notch 23 and the adjacent end walls of the side 5 are beveled as at 24 to adapt this element to serve as a nail puller. While the sides 5 and 6 are positively united by the rivet 8 they are held in spaced relation to each other by the said rivet to permit of the mounting between these sides (see Fi 2) of a hammer carrying shank 25 whic carries a hammer head 26 and which shank is pivotally mounted upon the rivet .8. There is also pivotally mounted upon the rivet 8-a shank 27 provided with a hooked end 28 which constitutes a shoe buttoner and also serves as a hanger for the entire tool. The shank 25 of the hammer is mounted close to the side 6 and coiiperates with a notch 29 formed in the side 6 in such man-.
shape as to adapt it to act as a driving element for the blade 8 when the shank 25 is -brought into longitudinal alinement with the handle. At this time a smart blow upon the head 26 either with the hand or with another object will result in forcing the point of the blade 8' into the can to be opened.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, for the relative mounting of the sev eral parts may be varied without departure from the invention. It is therefore to be understood that the invention includes within its purview Whatever changes fairly come within the spirit of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a handle consisting of spaced sides, a prong pivoted therebetween to swing upwardly into position between said sides and a stop struckfrom one of the sides and lying in the path of movement of said prong and limiting the outward movement of the prong to a position where it lies at an acute angle with the longitudinal edge of said side.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH A. PARRELLA.
