To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW CLARKE, citizen of the United States, residing at \Vilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastening devices and is a division of my prior application, Serial No. 830,528, filed April 8, 1914.
As the principal object I aim to provide a device of the character stated which is adapted especially for use in holding saws in position on the lid of a tool box, on the leg of a work bench or on a wall.
A further object is to construct the fastener with such regard to proportion, number and arrangement of parts that it may be cheaply manufactured, will be durable and ellicient in service, and may be readily and conveniently attached to any supporting structure on which or against which it is desired to place the saw.
The above recited and other incidental objections of a similar nature, which will be hereinafter more specifically treated, are accomplished in such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in the following specification and then particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings wherein it has been illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention as it is reduced to practice and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the fastener as being attached to a board which may form a portion of a table, tool box, or any other supporting structure to which it is desired to attach the fastener; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken medially through the fastener as illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the fastener unaccompanied by any supporting structure.
Before taking up the detailed description of the drawings, I desire to explain that, while the fastener has been designed for use in connection with saw blades, and has been illustrated in that connection, it may nevertheless be employed with equal efficiency in clamping or supporting almost any article against any support on which or against which it is desired to place the article.
In the accompanying drawings the fastener, designated as entirety by the numeral 10, is shown as consisting essentially in a body member 11, a clamping aw 12 which is pivoted therein, and a leaf spring 13 which is carried by the body member and acts to normally hold the clamping jaw 12 in operative engagement against a saw blade or any other article which may be interposed between the j aw and body member. The body member is preferably formed as a metallic casting, although if desired, it may be constructed in any suitable manner. As shown in the drawings, the body member is thickened as at 14: to lend strength to the casting. The rear lower terminal of the body member which is arcuate in shape is formed with an integral attaching plate or holding member 15 having apertures to receive screws or similar fastening devices 16 whereby the body member may be properly attached to a supporting structure conventionally illustrated at 17. The purpose in making the body member 11 arcuate in shape is to provide for the spacing of the body member 11 from the supporting structure when the plate 15 is secured thereto. A pair of side walls 18 and 19 are formed integrally with the body member 11 and are arranged to project beyond the thickened portion 14. The outer edges of the side walls extend in the line of the outer surface of the body member 11 while the lower inner edges of the side walls are cut away to produce, when the body member 11 is attached to the supporting structure, the slots or spaces 20 in which the saw blade 21 or any other article may be inserted. Intermediate the length of the side walls and extending from the inner edges thereof are formed a pair of transversely alined slots 22. These slots receive the pivot pin 23 on which the clamping jaw 12 is mounted, as shown in Fig. 2 particularly.
The jaw member 12 is preferably formed of metal, although in some instances wood may be employed. In thickness the jaw is approximately equal to the space between the side walls 18 and 19 so that it will fit snugly therebetween and Will, by engagementwith the side walls be held against shifting as it swings on its pivot. As previously explained, a leaf spring 13 is provided for normally holding the jaw 12 in operative engagement with the article inserted in the fastener. This spring is secured at one terminal to the inner face of the thickened portion 14; bya screw or any other similar fastening device 24. The free end of the spring bears against the inner face of the jaw 12 at the inner terminal thereof. As will be evident upc'n 'reference to Fig; 2 the spring normally tends to hold a cylindrical projection which is formed integrall with the jaw engaging with the saw bla' e 21. The projection 25 carries a facing pad 26. This pad is preferably formed of rubber, although some other material may be employed, if desired, and is secured to the projection by an adhesive or a rivet. The outer terminal of the jaw 12 is reduced in thickness to providea finger grip or lug 28, by means of which the jaw may be easily manipulated to permit the insertion or removal of the saw blade or other article.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the saw blade on being inserted in the opening 20 will rest on the shoulders 29 of the side walls and will be yieldably held against accidental displacement by the jaw 12, it being observed that the said shoulders are arranged to abut the supporting structure.
In reduction to practice it has been found that theform of this invention illustrated in the drawings, and referred to in the above description as the perferred embodiment, is the most'efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of this device will necessarily vary, it is desired to emphasize the fact that variousminor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrange ment of parts may be resorted to, when re quired, without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
l. A device of the character described including a holding member adapted for attachment to a supporting structure, a body member extending laterally upon one side of said holding member, side walls formed on said body member and extendinglaterally therefrom, the inner edges of said side walls being cut away to define slots adapted to receive an article, the inner extremities of said slots being defined by laterally extending shoulders, the said shoulders being adapted to support the article vertically, the said side walls having transversely extending slots formed therein communicating with said first mentioned slots, and a spring pressed clamping jaw detachably connected with the body member and pivotally mounted upon the side walls in said last mentioned slots, said jaw being adapted to engage. the article upon one side thereof.
2. The combination with a supporting structure, of a holding member adapted for attachment to the structure, a body member eXtending laterally upon one side of the holding member in spaced relation to the supporting structure, spaced side walls formed on the body member and extending inwardly toward the supporting structure, the said side walls being cut away to receive an article seating against the supporting structure and having laterally extending shoulders formed thereon at the inner extremities of said cut away portions disposed to support the article vertically, the space between the cut away portions of the side walls and the supporting structure being unobstructed, and a spring pressed clamping member pivoted between the side walls and adapted to engage the article for urging it toward the supporting structure.
