VETERINARY SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
Application filed September 28, 1914. Serial No. 863,873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK G. LANG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Surgical Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a" full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a veterinary surgical instrument.
The device embodying the present invention is a file for use in filing the teeth of animals. And it is the object and purpose of this invention to construct a file of this character including many new and useful features which will be apparent as understanding is had of the construction as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; and Fig. 3 IS a view from the opposite side of the instrument as shown in Fig. 1.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the construction of the veterinary surgical instrument, there is provided a handle formed of sections 1 and 2 which. are adapt ed to be detachably connected together as indicated in the dotted lines whereby the handle may be separated at will when not in use so as to occupy small space. The section 2- has a tapered end 3 which passes between the ears 4i and 5 formed integral with the retaining member 6. This retaining member is comprised of a base slotted from the end at which the cars 4 and 5 are formed to adjacent the opposite end as indicated at 7, and said base has formed thereon at the sides, gripping members 7 and 7* adapted to receive therebetween the file 9 as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The ear 4 and the end 3 of the handle are pierced to receive a binding screw 8 threaded at its end and received in a threaded opening in the ear 5 of the retaining member. With this construction it is obvious that by operating the binding screw 8 the retaining member may be located at a variety of positions with respect to the handle and held in any of such positions by merely tightening the binding screw. At the same time, as the ears 4 and 5 are placed one at either side of the slot 7 the tightening of said binding sore-w will draw the opposed sides of the retaining member toward each other and the file 9 held between said sides will be firmly gripped thereby and retained in position. The binding screw 8 therefore accomplishes the dual function of securing the file in the retaining member 6 and of holding the retaining member at any desired position with respect to the handle. If at any time the angular relation of the retaining member and the file held therein, with respect to the handle, is to be changed, it may be accomplished by merely loosening the screw 8 slightly, thereby permitting the pivotal movement of the retaining member to the desired position after which the screw may be again tightened to hold it in such position. Furthermore, if at any time it is desired to substitute a new file when the one in use has become worn or is otherwise useless, this may be accomplished by loosening the binding screw to a greater degree whereby the slot 7 may be widened and the sides of the retaining member spread apart freeing the file, when it may be detached from the retaining member and a new one placed therein.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I have provided a veterinary surgical instrument of this type which comprises but few parts and which is very simple in construction and one in which the operation of a single means secures the file at various an gu lar positions with respect to the handle and also secures the file firmly in place in the instrument. Modifications in detail may be resorted to Without departing from my invention which is defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a retaining member comprising a slotted base and side members extending at right angles from the base, the slot in said base extending from one end to adjacent the other end thereof, a file in said retaining member between the side members thereof, ears formed on the retaining member at either side of the slot, a handle having its end located between said ears, and means connecting said ears and handle, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described,
a retaining member comprising a slotted base and side members extending atright angles from the base, the slot in said base extending from one end to adjacent the other end thereof, a file in said retaining member between the side members thereof, ears formed on the retaining member at either side of the slot, a handle having its end located between said ears, and a clamping screw inserted through one ear and thehandle, and threaded into the other ear, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, a handle, a retaining member comprised of a base and spaced apart gripping members projecting from the base at each side, a file detaohably held between the gripping members and a single means pivotally connecting the retaining member to the handle and drawing the gripping members against the side edges of the file, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
