W. H. BRAOKETT. WHETSTONE HOLDER.
No. 427,965. PatentedMay 13, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. BRAOKETT, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHETSTONE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,965, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed September 26, 1889. Serial No. 325,216. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BRAOKETT, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Iniprovement in WVhetstone-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention ist-o provide a cheap, simple, and convenient holder upon which whetstones maybe temporarily placed and secured in position, so as to be more conveniently held by one hand while a knife is held by the other hand and applied to the Whetstone in the act of sharpening the same; and it consists in the construction, combina tion, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a Whetstone-holder constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the holder with the Whetstone removed. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the Whetstone removed from the holder.
A represents the base or body portion of the holder, provided at one end with a handle B, having pivoted to the upper side thereof aswinging clamp-bar 0, one end of which has a bearing when in position against the rear face or side of the swinging clip D, which is pivoted at its opposite ends to the opposite edges of the body A, near the said handle thereof, and when the said clamp-bar is turned to one side, as shown in Fig. 2, the said clip may be swung or turned back and down, so as to release the shouldered end E of the whetstone, which is adapted to fit within the said clip, and thereby permit the Whetstone F to be removed. The opposite end of the whetstone is provided with an incline or bevel H, which fits within a stationary clip L, secured to the opposite end of the body portion A of the holder, as shown. The said clamp-bar O is pivoted to the said handle portion B by a rivet or screw K, and its contacting end portion G is formed on a curve and slightly eecentric, so as to cause it to have a firm hearing against the clip D when it is turned into position, as shown in Fig. 1, and permit the said clamp-bar to be easily turned to one side when desired to remove the Whetstone therefrom and substitute one of a finer or coarser grade. I
It will be seen that by means of the holder the Whetstone maybe nearly worn away without liability of breaking, as -ithas a support upon the base portion A, and that by means of the handle portion the Whetstone may be held in the desired inclined position to facilitate the sharpening of a knife thereon, the holder being held in position by one hand while the knife is held in the other hand and applied upon the Whetstone in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the Whetstone F, having the shoulder E and incline end H, of the holder A, provided with a handle 13, having a pivoted clamp-bar C, swinging clip D, and stationary clip L, adapted to hold or release the said whetstone, as described.
WILLIAM H. BRACKETT.
