Description

c. R. GREY.
KNIFE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 27. 1918- 1,299,'173. Patented Apr. 1,1919.
CHARLES R. GREY, OF THERMOPOLIS, WYOMING.
KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1919.
Application filed June 27, 1918. Serial No. 242,137.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES R. GRnY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Thermopolis, in the county of Fremont and State of Wyoming, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to pocket knives or the like, and has for its object to provide the knife handle with a sharpening stone by means of which the blade or blades of the knife may be sharpened when desired, the sharpening stone being attached to the inner side of one of the scales of the knife handle and which scale is removably retained in place by-a suitable spring catch so that it may be readily removed when the knife is to be sharpened.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pocket knife embodying the present invention, the removable scale, carrying the sharpening stone, being shown detached from the knife handle. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, being partly a central longitudinal section of the removable scale and the sharpening stone mounted therein. Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of the removable scale carrying the sharpening stone and of the bolsters cooperating therewith. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 44 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section of the spring catch and parts cooperating therewith.
In the drawings, 12 denotesa pocket knife which may be of any suitable construction. Attached to one of the lining plates 13 of the knife handle are bolsters 14 and 15 which cooperate with a removable scale 16 having a hollowed out inner side in which is tightly fitted a sharpening stone 17. The bolster 14 is provided with an inwardly projecting lug 18 having a beveled or slanting inner end, and, on opposite sides of said lug, are undercut recesses 19. The end of the scale 16 adjacent the bolster 14 is provided with a central recess 20 to receive the lug 18 and with beveled or chamfered off side projections 21 fitting the undercut recesses 19 of the bolster 14.
The end of the scale 16 adjacent the bolster 15 is provided with a central recess 22 to receive a central lug 23 formed on the said bolster, and the said end of the scale 16 also comprises side projections 24 embracing the said lug 23 and having beveled ends fitting against beveled portions of said bolster 15. The bolster 15 is recessed for the reception of a coiled spring 25 acting on a holding device preferably consisting of a small ball 26 which may be retained in the recess in which said spring is located by slightly upsetting the end of the lug 23 of the said bolster 15, and which, as is usual, will preferably be formed of relatively soft metal which may be slightly drawn over the end of the recess in which the said spring and ball are located, for the purpose of preventing the ball from escaping from the said recess. The ball will, however, yieldingly project beyond the'inner end of the lug 23 so that it may seat itself in a small concave pocket 27 formed at the end of the recess 22, said ball, in cooperation with said pocket, thus serving as a spring catch to yieldingly retain the removable scale 16 in place.
The scale 16 is provided at one side with a finger or thumb nail recess 28 at its end near the bolster 15, so that said end may readily be lifted by overcoming the frictional stress of the spring catch referred to, the opposite end beveled portions of the scale permitting this lifting movement when the scale is to be removed from the knife handle.
To properly incase the sharpening stone 17 the scale 13 is preferably provided with outwardly extending side flanges 29, and the scale 16 may also be provided with inwardly extending side flanges 30 meeting the said flanges 29, so that the said sharpening stone 17 will be concealed from view by the flanges, as will be understood from Fig. 4, when the removable scale 16 is in its attached position.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides the handle of a pocket knife or the like with a sharpening device which can be quickly and conveniently removed when the knife is to be sharpened, and which may be readily restored to its normal position where it will be securely retained in .place by the spring catch re ferred to.
While the invention is herein shown as being applied to a pocket knife suitable for use by soldiers and others, it will be understood that it may be applied to the handles of other kinds of knives; and while the spring catch, for holding the removable scale and its attached sharpening stone in place, is herein shown as comprising a ball, it Will be understood that any suitable spring-pressed plunger having a rounded outer end might be used instead of the ball referred to; but the ball is preferred for the reason that steel balls, suitable for the purpose. mentioned, may be readily purchased in the open market.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a knife, the combination with a lining plate provided with fixed bolsters having inwardly projecting lugs one of which is constructed with a beveled end, one of said bolsters having beveled undercut recesses on opposite sides of its lug, of a hollow scale member having recesses at its opposite ends adapted to receive said lugs, and
having also beveled projections on opposite sides of said recesses, a sharpening stone secured to the inner side of said scale men iber, and a spring catch for retaining sald scale Copies of this patent may be obtained for five. cents each, by Washington, D. 6.
member in place but permitting of its ready removal, when desired.
2. In a knife, the combination with a lining plate provided With fixed bolsters having inwardly projecting lugs one of which is constructed with a beveled end, one of said bolsters having beveled undercut recesses on opposite sides of its lug, of a hollow scale member having recesses at its opposite ends adapted to receive said lugs, and having also beveled projections on opposite sides of said recesses and a concave pocket at one end, a sharpening stone secured to the inner side of said scale member, and a spring catch for retaining said scale member in place but permitting of its ready removal, when desired, said catch comprising a rounded spring-pressed member held in one of said bolsters but proj eeting slightly there from and thus adapted to engagesaidconcave pocket in said scale.v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
