HANDLE FOR KNIVES.
Patented Aug. 18, 1885.
WITNESSES j 6 I UNITED STATES PATENT Enron.
PAUL KOSKA, OF MARTINTON, ILLfNOlS.
HANDLE FOR KNIVES.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,563, dated August 181, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL KOSKA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Martinton, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Knives; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to knives for farriers use; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter set forth and specified.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A represents the handle of a knife, which consists of a central metallic portion or back, B, which is curved or bent upon itself, as shown at B, the end of this bent portion being beveled, as shown at b. Opposite the upper end of the back of the handle is secured a block,O, which is of the same width and thickness as the portion B, its end being recessed and beveled, as shown at c. The inner edges of the portions B C are parallel with each other, and their upper ends are on a line so as to form shoulders, against which the shoulders formed adjacent to the shank of the knife-blade will abut.
On each side of the portions B O are attached metallic plates 1), which are cutaway at (I, so as to form a depression. These plates extend slightly beyondthe ends ofthe portions B C, so as to provide side bearings for the knifeblade.
Over the metallic plates E are attached portions E, which form the outer portion of the handle. The portions D E are secured to the parts B O by means of rivets e e, which pass through the parts, the ends being upset in the usual manner. A spring, F. which is bent upon itself, is placed within the lower portion of the handle, so that one end will bear against the back B, while the opposite end bears against the end portion of a pivoted catch, G, which catch is retained between the side plates, D D. by means of a pivot, c. The lower portion of this pivoted catch opposite the depressions d d is serrated, while its opposite end is provided with an angular catch, 9, the upper end of which is provided with a tongue, which engages with a recess, 0. The blade H is provided, near its lower end, with shoulders h h and a shank, h, the lower end of which is beveled or inclined, as shown, and provided with an angular recess, t, with which the projecting portion or catch 9 of the pivoted portion G engages when the shank is placed in the handle.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be readily seen that the knife when inserted in the handle will be retained there by the pivoted section G, and that the blade may be readily and quickly removed from the bandle by pressing upon the serrated portion of the pivoted section, thereby raising the catch 9 out of the recess i.
With a handle constructed as hereinbefore described, blades of different configuration and for different purposes may be quickly inserted in the handle.
I claim The improved knife for farriers use herein described, consisting of a handle composed of the central sections, B O, to which. are rigidly attached side pieces, D D, which project at their upper ends beyond said sections, and provided with recesses d d, in combination with a pivoted section, G, having a catch, 9, formed thereon, a knife-blade with a recessed shank, and an independent spring, F, located in the body of the handle and having curved portions bearing, respectively, against the wall of said handle and the lower part of the pivot-section G, substantially as shown,'and for the purpose set forth.
Intestiniony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PAUL KOSKA.
