This invention relates to erasers.
The general object of the invention is to provide a disk eraser with novel means for maintaining the erasing member clean and sharp.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a disk eraser including a body portion with an abrasive member slidable in the body portion and normally urged toward the eraser.
Another object of the invention is to provide a 'o novel means for mounting an abrasive member on a disk eraser. l
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying y drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in 5 an eraser which is indicated generally at I0 and which includes the usual circular or disk-like eraser member II and a handle portion I2. The handle portion I 2 includes a pair of body members I 3 and I4. i
The body members I3 and I4 are secured together at each end by pins I5 and I 6, each ,of which includes a pair of members comprising a hollow internally threaded cylindrical shaft I1 with a threaded head member I8 which engages 5 the hollow shaft. y
The eraser I I is rotatable in the pin I5 while the other pin I6 is tted in an aperture I 9 in the body of a removable brush 2I. The body members I3 and I4 have opposed complemental recesses 22 0 and 23 which receive the brush body and tightly engage the same.
The body members I 3 and I4 include other opposed slots 24 and 25 in which an abrasive member 26 is slidably mounted. The abrasive member 5 is made of suitable gritty material and preferably (Cl. 1Z0-36) includes a rectangular body 21 having a hole 28 in one end and having a V-shaped notch 29 in the other end which notch is adapted to engage the edge of the eraser. The shape of the notch 29Vwill be determined by the shape in which it is desired 5 to maintain the eraser edge.
A spring 30 has one end arranged in the hole 28 and has its other end engaging in a hole 3l formed in the end wall 3I which defines the end of the slots 2| and 22. In use the parts are assembled l0 and the headed members I8 are turned into securing position.
The eraser is used in the usual manner and in order to sharpen the erasing edge thereof the eraser is turned causing its edge to move in the 15 notch 29. The spring 30 urges the abrasive member towards the eraser and thus as the eraser is worn away the sharpening and cleaning action is not interfered with.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show a modification of my 20 invention wherein the abrasive member comprises two portions 32 and 33 which have a hole 34 therein and which have bevelled ends 35. Strips of abrasive material 36 such as sand paper, emery cloth, etc. are arranged over the bevelled 25 portions and have their outer ends folded over and disposed in slots 3l which have enlarged 'inner ends 38 to receive the folded over portion and thus anchor the strip in place. The inner ends of the strips 36 may have similar folded over 301 ends inserted in slots 39 having enlarged portions 40.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I show a modified abrasive member which is indicated generally at and which is similar to the member 26 previously de- 35 scribed except that the notch 5I which engages the eraser 52 has an arcuate edge 53 at the juncture of the sides of the V and this edge is dened by an arc whose radius is longer than the radius defining the edge 54 of the eraser. 40
In Figs. 9 and 10 the abrading or cutting member 55 is made of metal or other suitable material and includes a pair of spaced hard metal knife members 56 which are embedded in the member 55 and which include V-notches which engage 45 the edge of the eraser to perform the scraping or cutting operation.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel self-cleaning and self-sharpening eraser which can be eco- 50 nomically manufactured and which is highly ellicient for the intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In an eraser, a body, a circular eraser rotatably mounted on said body, said body having a 55 slot therein, an abrasive member slidable in said slot, said abrasive member having a V-shaped edge thereon adapted to engage the eraser edge, and a spring having one end engaging the body and the other end of said spring engaging the abrasive member.
2. In an eraser, a body, a circular eraser rotatably rnounted on said body, said body having a slot therein, an abrasive member slidable in said slot, said abrasive member being made of a single piece of materiai and having a notched edge thereon adapted to engage the eraser edge, and means to urge said abrasive member against the eraser.
3. In an eraser, a body comprising a pair of members, means to secure said members to gether, said means including a pair of pins, a circular eraser rotatably mounted cn one of said pins, an abrasive member slidable on said body, said member having a V-shaped edge thereon adapted to engage the eraser edge, and means to urge said abrasive member against the eraser edge.
4. In an eraser, a body, a circular eraser rotatably mounted on said body, said body having a slot therein, an abrasive member slidable in said slot, said abrasive member having a V- shaped edge thereon adapted to engage the eraser edge, said abrasive member having a recess therein, and a spring disposed in said recess and having one end engaging the end wall of the recess, the other end of said spring engaging the body.
5. In an eraser, a body, a circular eraser rotatably mounted on said body, said body members having a slot therein, an abrasive member slidable in said slot, said abrasive member comprising two similar portions each having a bevelled edge, a piece of abrasive sheet material tting over the bevelled edges, means to hold the abrasive sheets in place, said bevelled portions forming a notch receiving the eraser edge and means to urge the abrasive member against the eraser.
6. In an eraser, a body, a circular eraser rotatably mounted on said body, said body having a slot therein, an abrasive member slidable in said slot, said abrasive member having an arcuate end portion which is V-shaped in cross section and adapted to engage the eraser edge, and a spring having one end engaging the body and the other end of said spring engaging the abrasive member.
