COMBINATION-TOOL.
fSPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 672,125, dated April 16, 1901.
Application filed September 12, 1900. Serial No. 29.824. (No model.)
To all whom, it' may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN PAUL HEIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayshore, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined toolhandle and vise, the object'being to provide an eiective device of this character of simple and durable construction which may be easily manipulated to serve either as a vise or a tool-handle.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be delined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l. is a View in perspective of a combination tool-handle and vise embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a .modified form of the invention.
The referencenumeral l designates the loop or frame of a handle having a sleeve or socket 2 formed longitudinally thereof. Within the sleeve or socket 2 is secured a fixed jaw 3, having a notch 4 serving as a part of a seat for the shank or stem of a tool.
5 designatesa screw extending transversely through the loop l adjacent to its outer end, and said screw extends through an opening in a lever 6, which is of sufficient length to extend into the socket or sleeve 2 to constitute the movable jaw of the device, the end of which is liush with that of the fixed jaw 3, and the inner face of which is provided with a notch 7, which alines with the notch 4 in the jaw 3.
Upon the screw 5 is mounted a thumb-nut 8, having a boss 8a, which is adapted to bear against the adjacent end of the lever 6, the latter being beveled adjacent to the nut 8 to form a fulcrnm-point 9 to bear against the nut. Y
A coil-spring 10 surrounds the screw 5 between the lever 6 and the adjacent side of the loop 1 of the handle, the function of said spring being to normally tilt the lever 6 upon its fulcrum 9, thus separating the jaw end of the lever from the fixed jaw 3 within the socket or sleeve of the handle.
It will be obvious from the illustration in Figs. l and 2 that the revolution of the nut 8 will force the jaw end of the lever 6 toward the jaw 3, thus firmly clamping between said jaws'any article which may be placed between them. When the device is employed as a tool-handle, the shank or stem of the tool is securely clamped in the manner above described, and may be readily released by moving The nut 8 in the reverse direction.
I preferably provide the movable jaw or lever 6 of the device with a lug or projection l1, adapted to enter a corresponding groove or depression l2, formed in the frame of the handle.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the construction diliers from that of the other figures only in that the jaws 3L and 6a are extended beyond the edge of the sleeve or socket 2, thus better adapting the invention for use as a vise for jewelers or other special work.
I claiml. A combination tool-handle and vise comprising a frame having a loop and a sleeve or socket; a xed jaw secured within the sleeve or socket; and a spring-pressed lever fulcrumed within the loop, and provided with a jaw end.
2. Acombinaton tool-handle and vise,con1 prising a frame having a loop, and a sleeve or socket; a fixed jaw secured within the sleeve or socket; a screw extending transversely of the loop; a spring-pressed lever supported on said screw and formed with a gripping-jaw at one end; and a nut for adjusting said lever.
3. A combination tool-handle and vise comprising a frame consisting of a loop-handle and a sleeve or socket; a jaw fixed within said sleeve or socket; a screw extending across said loop; a lever through which the screw extends, formed with a gripping-jaw; a spring surrounding the screw, and a nut for adjusting the lever.
4:. A combination tool-handle and vise,com
prising a frame consisting of a loop-handle screw, and having a boss or projection bearand a sleeve or socket; a jaw fixed within ing against said level'. 1o said sleeve; at screw extending across the In testimony whereof I afix my signature loop; a lever having an opening through in presence of two witnesses.
which the screw extends, one end of said ie- ALLEN PAUL HEDT. ver being formed with zt gripping-jaw, while Witnesses: its opposite end is beveled to form a fulcruin- MYRA L. WICKS,
