Description

M. M. BERG.
' COMBINATION TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 10. I917- 1,364:,829. Patented Jan. 4,1921.
U-NlTED STATES MONS M. BERG, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Application filed December 10, 1917.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mons M. BERG, a citizen of the United States, resident of Duluth, county of St. Louis, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool of the type commonly designated as a plier, equipped with various devices and accessories by means of which the user of the tool may clip a wire, drive or draw a nail, measure a wire or other article, punch a hole in leather or other similar material, and in short use the tool for a great variety of purposes where generally a number of independent tools would be required.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool, showing the jaws in their normal position; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the jaws adjusted for other work.
In the drawing, 2 and 3 represent the shanks of the tool, having a pivotal connection at 4 through holes 5 in the shanks.
These holes-allow relative movement of the jaws for separating their clamping faces, a common construction in tools of this kind. The shanks terminate in jaws 6 and 7 having gripping faces 8, preferably made concave for the purpose of grasping a pipe or tube. At the inner end of the gripping surfaces wire clippers 9 are provided. The jaw 6 has a hammer face 10 to adapt the tool for driving nails. and the jaw 7 has a cutting edge 11 which may be used for smoothing a rough surface or rounding the edge of a piece of wood and generally will have the functions of a small plane or draw-knife. This cutting edge 11 is formed by making a recess 11 extending inwardly at the inner terminal curved face of jaw 7 and both curved face and recess extend obliquely to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4., 1921.
Serial No. 206,486.
the longitudinal axis of the tool, as shown, so that the terminal edge of the jaw will constitute a crosswise extending continuous cutting edge substantially co-equal with the width of the jaw that will serve the purpose of plane or draw-knife as stated. The curved face of the jaw will serve to afford a rocking surfaceor bearing in the operation of using the draw-knife so as to facilitate removing the portion that may be planed or cut by the cutting edge. The shank 2 has a handle 12 and the shank 3 has a handle 13 which terminates in a screwdriver 14. The edges of the handle 13 have recesses 15 in opposite sides thereof which may be used for drawing nails, and the handle 12 terminates in a nail-drawing claw 16 and near said claw is provided with a longitudinal slot 17 communicating with an orifice 18 which may also be used for naildrawing purposes. A punch for leather or other material 17 is tapped at 18 into the handle 12, but is preferably loosely mounted so that it may be removed if desired. A strap or other piece of leather inserted between the handle 13 and the end of the punch may be easily and quickly perforated.
The shank 3 near the middle portion thereof has a beveled surface 19 on which I provide a lineal measure 20. This measure may be used in determining the proper length of a piece .of wire to be severed or the distance between the holes punched in a strap, or any other purpose where the user of the tool may desire to quickly and accurately ascertain the lineal measure of an article on which he may be working. This measure is particularly useful in connection with the punch device, as a number of holes can be easily and quickly punched in a leather strap and equally spaced apart by the use of the punching pin and the measuring surface.
he tool may be made in various sizes,
and in various ways the details of construction ma be modified and still be within the scope o my invention.
i I claim as my invention:
A tool comprising handles and gripping jaws at the end of the handles, one of the to form a plane or draw-knife cutting edge jaws formed with a curved outer face and a with a curved bearing surface back thereof. 10 recess at the inner terminal of the curved In witness whereof, I have hereunto set face, to form a cutting edge substantially my hand this 27th day of November, 1917.
coequal with the width of the jaw, the MONS M. BERG. curved face of said jaw and the recess eX- Witnesses: tending substantially in the direction of but CHAS. V. MCCOY,
obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the tool M. E; MURRAY.
