TOOL.
Original application filed September 18, 1915,
. Specification of Letters Patent.
16, 1915. Serial No. 56,277.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEO CA'RSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
and more particularly to a tool of the character disclosed in my pending application for patent filed September 18th, 1915, Sc-.
rial Number 51,456, of which the present a pair of cutter blades 24. Each of the application constitutes a division.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a simple, reliable and serviceable means upon pliers and like tools having' relatively movable parts whereby piano wires, pivot pins and other metal elements may be cut.
The invention has for a more particular object to provide upon atool of the above character having confronting gripping jaws, relatively adjustable cutter blades primarily provided for cutting piano wires and additional adjustable cutters mounted upon the handle portion of the tool for cutting off the protruding ends of bearing pins;
It is another object of the invention to provide simple means for quickly and securely fastening the cutter blades in position upon the parts of the tool, said securing means permitting of the use of filler plates to. compensate for wear upon the blades when sharpened and assure the proper coaction of their cutting edges.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a tool such as that above referred to, illustrating the preferred mounting and arrangement of the cutting blades upon the tool members; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2'-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the tool jaws; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the adjustable cutter blades.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates two similar tool handles whlch are provided adjacent one of their ends with the This invention relates-to an improved tool,
, stood that the tool, as disclosed in the accompanying drawings is for illustrative purposes only and the jaws may be of other shapes and proportions and provided upon their confronting faces with any desired gripping means.
In carrying out my invention, I provide longitudinal portions 9 of the tool is provided in one face with a recess 25 to receive one of the cutting blades, inwardly projecting shoulders 26 being formed on the opposite walls of the recess and adjacent to the outer edge of the tool member, thus providing the reduced outer end portion 27 of the recess 25. Each of the cutting blades 24 is also provided in one face with a rectangular recess 28 opening upon the edge of the blade and longitudinal shoulders 29 are formed upon the opposite edges of said recess. The recesses 28 are provided for the purpose of receiving the clamping plates 30 which are securely held in position upon the shoulders 29 of the cutter blades and in the reduced ends 27 of the recesses 25 by means of the screws 31 which are threaded into the jaw members of the tool. The inner confronting edges of the cutting blades 24 are tapered on opposite sides to produce the cutting edges, indicated at 32. These cutting blades are employed in cutting piano wire or other metallic parts to which access may conveniently be obtained. When the cutting edges of the blades require sharpening, they may be removed from the tool members and after being sharpened, replaced thereon. In order that the cutting edges of these blades will properly 'coact after being sharpened, filler plates 33 are provided which are adapted to be disposed 26 and the opposed on opposite sides of Patented Mar. 28, 1916. Serial No. 51,456. Divided and this application filed October her 5, preferably at apoint adjacent the pivot pin 7, in precisely the same manner as the blades 24 are mounted in the jaws of the tool. The blades 34, however, slightly 'extent from the bearing in which they are 1 mounted and it will be understood that as the blades 34 are counter-sunk in the handle members, their outer faces at the cutting edges thereof can be engaged directly against the face of the bearing member.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it 'will be seen that I have devised a very simple and serviceable mounting for the cutting blades upon the members of the .tool which, as above stated, will be found particularly advantageous when employed in repair work upon pianos. It is, however, apparent that the invention may also be used with the best results for various other analogous purposes. By the provision of the filler plates 33, it will be seen that the cutter blades'can be repeatedly sharpened and yet be properly set and secured in position upon the tool members so that their opposed cutting edges will properly coact. While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements of the device, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly .said blades being slotted and having longiembodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described this invention, 4 what I claim is l. The combination-with a tool having op posed relatively movable parts, each of said parts being recessed, cutting blades adapted to be arranged in said recesses, said blades being slotted and having longitudinal shoulders projecting inwardly from opposite" edges of the slots, clamping plates adapted to be arranged in said slots and the recesses of the tool upon the shoulders of the respective blades, and means for detachably fastening said clamping plates to the parts of the tool. l
2. The combination with a tool having opposed relatively movable parts, each of said parts being recessed and having a shoulder at one end of each recess, cutting blades adapted to be arranged in-said recesses flush with the faces of the respective tool parts,
tudinal shoulders projecting inwardly from opposite edges of the slots, the outer ends of the recesses in the tool parts being reduced in width, clamping plates adapted to be arranged upon the shoulders of the cutter blades and extending into the reduced ends of said recesses, filler plates adapted to be arranged between the cutting blades and said shoulders, and fastening screws to secure the clamping plates to the respective parts of the tool and upon the shoulders of the cutting blades.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
l LEO CARSKI.
