Description

E. M. GRAHAM.
PLIERS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.8, 1919.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD M. GRAHAM, O1 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PLIERS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD M. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descripit tion.
The invention relates to pliers and its object is to provide improved cutting devices on pliers.
It has been common practice heretofore to form integral cutting edges at one side of a pair of pliers. These have been found to be objectionable, because the metal of the cutters was not suitably tempered to be efficient in cutting. One object of the present invention is to provide pliers with separately formed cutter-blades which are removably secured to the jaws.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved cutter-blades for pliers which are adapted to be secured to the jaws by screws and in such manner that the screws are not subjected to any severe stresses when metal is being out.
A still further object of the invention is to provide pliers with reversible knives which are secured to the jaws.
The invention consists in the several nove features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of pliers embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective of one of the cutters. Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the plier-j aws showing the blade-retaining recess.
The invention is illustratedas applied to a device comprising two members pivotally connected by a pin 7, each having a jaw 8 and a handle 9, as well. understood in the art. ()ne side of each jaw is formed with a recess 10 having V-shaped ends 11. Flat blades 12 are each provided with beveled cutting edges 13 and 14 on opposite edges thereof and with ends 15 which are V-shaped to conform to the edges of the recess 10 in the jaws. Each blade 12 is removably secured to one of the jaws by a screw 16 which passes through a countersunk opening in the cutter and is screw-threaded to a hole in the jaw. The blades are reversible in the recesses so that Specification of Letters latent.

either of their cutting edges can be rendered operative.
A. characteristic of the construction set forth is that the blades are separately formed from the pliers and may be properly tempered to render them efiicient in cutting before they are secured to the jaws. Another characteristic is that when the cutters are operated, the outward stresses to which they are subjected as they are forced into the metal being cut, is resisted by the outwardly convergent engaging edges between the blades and the jaws and, therefore, the screw is relieved of shearing or other stresses in cident to cutting. Another characteristic is that the blades are reversible so that when one edge becomes worn or broken a new cutting edge may be provided by simply reversing the blade in its retaining recess.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the 1. In pliers, the combination of a pair of pivotally connected members each having a gripping jaw, a handle and a recess extending in the plane of one of its outer side faces, substantially flat cutter blades removably secured and disposed in said recesses, the edges of said recesses and blades being conformably and outwardly convergent so that the edges of the recesses will act as shoulders to resist the outward stresses upon the blades and being formed to permit the blades to be removed transversely from or placed transversely into the recesses while the members are in connected relation, and means for removably securing the blades in the recesses.
2. In pliers, the combination of a pair of pivotally connected members, each having a gripping jaw, a handle and a recess extending in the plane of one of its outer side faces, substantially flat cutting blades fitting in said recesses, and screws extending directly through said blades and crosswise of the jaws and removably securing the blades in the recesses, the edges of said recesses and blades being conformably and outwardly convergent so that the edges of the recesses will act as shoulders to resist the outward stresses upon the blades and being formed to permit the blades to be removed transversely from or placed transversely into the recesses While the members are in connected relation.
3. In pliers, the combination of a pair of pivotally connected members, each having a jaw, a handle and a recess and extending in the plane of one of its outer'side faces ane substantially flat blades having a plurality of substantially parallel cutting edges, and
means to removably secure the blades in the recesses, the blades being reversible so that eitherof the cutting edges may be brought into operative position, the blades being 'pivotally connected members, each having a jaw with a recess in and extending in the plane of one of its outer side faces, and a handle, reversible substantially flat cutting blades fitting in said recesses, and means for removably securing the blades in the recesses, the edges of the blades and recesses being provided with substantially l-shaped interfitting edges formed to permit trans verse removal or insertion of the blades While the avvs are in connected relation.
