awuzwtoz C] Mot we AUGUST J. FRANKELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GRIPPINGr-TOOL.
Application filed June 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. FRANKELL, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in gripping devices and more particularly comprehends the provision of a novel device of this nature that is especially designed for use in connection with a miter boX or other analogous supporting structure for the purpose of securely retaining the molding or other article being acted upon, in position during the sawing or other operation.
The main object of my invention is to provide a device of the above nature that is con structed whereby it will beheld in an advantageous position on the miter box or other support at all times and which by reason of this construction it may be easily and quickly operated in accordance with the desire of the user.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance of the following description.
The above and other objects which will become apparent, are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts through out the several views;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as shown in use in connection with a miter box having a molding arranged therein.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the body member of the tool.
Fig. 3 is a face View of the clamping member of the tool.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view showing the detachable foot which is carried on the gripping member.
My invention consists generally of a body member which is enlarged adjacent its lower extremity to form an engaging jaw 11 having a serrated surface 12 and constricted h y a j nt the upp an t provi Specification of Letters Patent.

an operating handle 13. This body member may be formed of any desired material. However in viewof the fact that the same is integral throughout, it may efficiently be cast.
A pair of parallel spaced apart arms 14 project inwardly from an intermediate point on the body member, and are curved, to assume a. substantially semi-circular form as indicated in Fig. 1, the lower ends 15 thereof providing suitable engaging jaws. The arms 1% are provided at a point adjacent the body member with a series of oppositely alined openings 16 through a selected pair of which is adapted to be passed a pin 17 which pivotally supports the clamping member. A fastening element such as illustrated at 18 may be employed on the pin 17 for the purpose of retaining the same.
For the purpose of receiving the clamping member (presently described) the body member 10 is provided with a slot 19 which communicates between the arms 14, and when the clamping member is in an operative position, the said arms will form suitable guiding elements which will relieve the strain of lateral stress which may be applied to the clamping member and obviate the danger of breakage.
The clamping member consists of a suitable curved element 20 having an enlarged handle portion 21 provided at one end while its other end is formed into a dove-tail 22. In the use of the clamping member, the same is positioned through'the slot 19 as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the curved portion 23 thereof will operate between the arms 14. The pin 17 is then passed through the body of the clamping member whereby the latter will be held in pivotal relation to the body member.
A detachable foot member 24 having a substantially dovetailed groove 25 formed therein, is adapted to receive the correspondingly formed portion of the clamping member whereby a comparatively tight connection is attained such as'will prevent the displacement of the foot or shoe when the device is in operation. A section of material such for instance as cork, as indicated by the numeral 26 may be secured to the under face of the foot member in order to obviate the danger of defacing or scarring the molding.
Upon reference to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the element 20 extends along the back of the handle portion 21 so as to form a tongue 27 whereby when the handle portions 21 and 13 respectively are brought into close proximity, this tongue will seat within the groove 28 in the handle 13 and provide means to prevent the independent lateral movement ofeither of the members.
In the operation of my invention, the same being used in connection with a miter box and molding, the body member is arranged on the outer face of the miter box so that the lower engaging jaw 11 will engage the outer surface. When in this position, the arms '14 extend over the top of the miter box and engage the inner surface thereof. After the molding has been adjusted to a desired position, the handles 21 and 13 respectively may be grasped by the operator which will cause the operation of the foot member 2i so as to force the same into engagement with the molding. VVhen'the members are manipulated in this manner, the respective handles will be brought into close proximity such as will eifect the seating of the tongue 27 on the groove 28, consequently the operator may continue the sawing operation with his other hand. By the provision of the series of openings 16, it will be understood that the clamping member may be adjusted to compensate for the varying thickness of the moldings. It will also be understood that the arms 14 will serve to retain the tool in conjunction with the miter box after the molding has been removed, so that the same will always be ready for operation.
In reducing my invention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most efficient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence with the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim aS new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support of a body member having a jaw to engage one face of said support, a second jaw on said body member projecting over the upper edge of said support and opposing the aforesaid jaw by engaging the opposite face of said support, said body member provided with a slot intermediate its end, a member passed through said slot, a handle formed at one end of said member, an engaging foot carried at the other end of said member and operating within said support, and means to pivotally support said member, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character described, a body member, a handle formed at the upper end of said member, a jaw formed at the ether end of said body member, spared arms formed intermediate the end of said body member having their free ends curved to form jaws to oppose the aforesaid jaw, said body member provided with a slot opening between said arms, a gripping member passed through said slot and operating between said arms, means to adjustably support said gripping member, a hand grip formed at one end of said gripping member disposed in proximity to said first mentioned handle, and a retaining foot carried at the other end of said gripping member, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST J. FRANKELL.
