COMBINATION PUNCH AND CLAMLRING-TOOL. I
maniac.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
1 Application filed April 12, 1915. Serial No. 20,660.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES O. GLADWIN,
. a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at New York city, Manhattan borough, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Punches and Clamping-Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a combination punch and clamping tool, the improvements being directed mainly ,to provide a handtool which can be carried in a tool-chest or bag and with which a workman is able to punch holes in relatively light material and to also grip pipes, nails or the like which are to be cut ofl", threaded, or otherwise treated. p
By means of. my improved device, elevator-cables, electrical conduits'or the like can be firmly gripped in order that they may be cut oil by a hack-saw.
By means of my improved implement electrical conduits can be readily punched and cut off, the clamping device being arranged to firmly grip the conduit for either punching or cutting.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the essential features of which will be summarized in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof; wherein Figure 1 is a side view of my improved punch and clamping tool; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional .view of my improved tool, the
clamp being removed, the section being taken on a line 33 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a portion of an electrical conduit which can be clamped and Punched 4 by my tool.
As herein illustrated, my improved punch and clamping tool consists of the base portion 1 having abracket 2, in this instance integral therewith. To'the bracket 2 is pivotally secured at 3, the movable element or arm 4, consisting of the yoke members 5 and 6 which straddle the bracket 2. The jaw 7 .of the yoke is made long enough to permit the arm 4 to be swung upwardly over the bracket 2 and rotatable spindle 8 carried thereby. The spindle 8 is threaded and is carried by a threaded opening 9 in thebracket 2. Thelower end of the spindle 8 terminates in a punch 10 alining with a dieopening 11 in the anvil portion 12 of the base 1.
To rotate the spindle 8, I provide the same with a handle or lever 13 which passes The anvil 12 is adapted to receive flanged conduit members 14, such as illustrated in Fig. 2, and for this purpose the said anvil is raised to provide recesses 15 and 16-to receive the flanges 17 and 18 of the conduit so that the plate portion 19 of the conduit will lie upon the upper surface 20 of the anvil in order that a hole 21 can be punched. The anvil also serves to form one member of a clamp when a conduit is to be cut. The other member of the clamp consists of two faces 22 (one only being shown) on the under edge of each member 5 and 6 of the arm 4, the said faces being parallel with the face 20 of the anvil when the arm is locked. To lock the arm I provide a binding bolt 23 pivoted at 24 in the cars 25 and 26 on the base 1'. The bolt 23 passes into a slot 27 in the free end of the arm 4, A wing-nut 28 serves to lock or force the clamp arm downwardly upon the material between the arm and base-1.
For the purpose of holding cables, pipes, cylindrical conduits, nails or the like, I provide the base 1 and arm 4 with alining gripping recesses. To hold nails, I provide the alining recesses 29 and 30located adjacent the front of the arm and base; For holding flexible cables, conduits or the-like,'I provide the base 1 and arm 4 with semi-cylindrical pockets 31, 32, 33 and 34. Each arm 5 and 6 is provided with these pockets that aline with similar pockets in the base 1. Should I desire to grip a nail for the purpose of cutting or for other purposes, I raise the arm 4 and place the nail in one of the recesses 30, then lower the arm and lock it by means of the bolt 23 and nut 28, after which'the nail will be firmly held. To hold cables, conduits or the like, I raise the arm 4 and place the cable or conduit in either the pocket 32' or 34, then lower the arm and lock it. For. producing a firm grip, I provide the pockets 31, 32, 33 and 34 with recesses 35 to produce gripping teeth 36. To use the punch I swing tool, a base-member, a bracket carried thereby, a rotatable punch carried by the bracket, means to operate the punch, an arm pivotally secured, at one end thereof, to said bracket, an anvil-carried by the base-member located under said punch and provided with a die opening aliningiwith said punch, said base being provided with recesses one on each side of the anvil, said base-member being provided with pockets to receive a cylindrical conduit or the like, said arm being also rovided with pockets ali ning with the poc ets in said base, said arm being also provided with a flat face located over the top surface of said anvil to form a clamping element, and means to lock said arm in closed position. v
2. In a combination punch and clampingtool, a base-member, a bracket carried thereby, a rotatable punch carried by the bracket, means to operate said punch, an arm consisting of a plurality of members to form a jaw formed to pass over said bracket, each of said arm-members being pivotally secured to said bracket one at each side thereof, an
anvil carried by the base-member located under said punch and provided with a'die opening alinimg with said punch, said base being provided with-a recess on each side of said anvil to receive the flanges of a flanged coriduit, said base being provided with pockets having teeth to grip cylindrical conduits or the like and recesses to receive nails or the like, said arm being also provided with pockets, having teeth, alining.
with the alining with the recesses in .said base, each of the arm-members having a flat face on its under surface located over the top surface of said anvil to form a clamping-element, and a locking bolt to clamp 'said, arm in closed position.
Signed at New York city, N. Y., this 10 day of April, 1915.
CHARLES c. 'GLADWIN.
