BENCH-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ()ct. 31, 1916.
Application filedJuly 26, 1916. Serial No. 111,533.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LAWSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Bench-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bench clamps for holding plank in a perpendicular position while the edge is being planed or smoothed off, and the object of my invention is to provide a bench clamp that will automatically tighten up on the plank placed in position, and can be released without touching it with the hand.
I attain the object of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved bench clamp. Fig. 2 is side elevation of the improved bench clamp. Fig. 3 is an end elevation from the open end of the improved bench clamp. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the improved bench clamp in use, holding a plank while it is being planed.
In the several views of the improved bench clamp, the like characters designate like parts.
In Fig. 1 A is the bed plate having on one side B a jaw. C is the movable jaw. E and F are shoulders on the slidable jaw. G is a lever. H is a fulcrum for the lever. I, I, I, I, are the screws that fasten the bedplate to the bench. Dotted lines J, J, are the guide grooves in the bedplate. K, K, are the guides on the under side of the movable jaw. D designates a plank in position.
In Fig. 2 A is the bedplate. B is the jaw on the side of the bedplate. C is the jaw on the movable plate. G is the lever. II is the fulcrum for the lever, and is a rivet in. the bed plate. J, J, are the. guide grooves in the bedplate. K, K, are the guides on the underside of the movable plate. F is one of the shoulders on the movable plate. I, I, are the screws that hold the bedplate to the bench. D is a plank in position.
In Fig. 3 A is the bed plate. B is the jaw on the bed plate. C is the jaw on the movable plate. E, F, are the shoulders on each side of the point of the lever on the movable plate. G is the lever. J is the guide groove in the bedplate, K is the guide on the underside of the movable jaw. I, I, are the screws in the bedplate. D is the end of a plank in position.
In Fig. 4 A is the bed plate. C is the movable plate and jaw. E, F, are the shoulders on the top of the movable plate and jaw. G is'the lever, and H is the fulcrum for the lever.
In use the end of the plank is placed in the open end of the bench clamp and pushed forward until the end of the plank comes in contact with the lever, at which time the lever pushes the movable jaw up tight against the plank, which in turn comes against the jaw B on the side of the bedplate A, holding the plank firm and in an upright position, convenient for the plane.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bench clamp, the combination of a bed plate with a jaw on one of the sides, and one or more guide grooves on its upper side at right angles to the jaw, a movable plate with a jaw on one side and guides on its under surface, and two shoulders upon its upper surface, with an angular-lever fulcrumed upon the bed-plate, the end of said lever extends between and acts on the two shoulders on the plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a bench clamp, the combination of a bedplate, having a jaw on one side and one or more guide grooves at right angles to jaw, in its upper surface and a fulcrum for a lever, a slidable plate, having a jaw on one side, one or more guides on its under surface at right angles to said jaw, and two shoulders upon its upper surface adapted to engage the end of an angular lever, with an angular lever fulcrumed to the bedplate at a point which permits the short end of the lever to engage the two shoulders upon the upper surface of the slidable platejaw, and the long end of the lever to engage the end of the plank, and means for attaching the bed plate to a bench, substantially as shown and described.
3. A bench clamp, consisting of a bedplate having a jaw on one side, a fulcrum upon its upper surface, and one or more guide grooves at right angles to the jaw, in its upper surface, a slidable jaw-plate with a jaw on the inner side of the plate, one or more guides on its lower surface, at right angles to the jaw, and two shoulders upon the upper surface at right angles to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, I
the iaw, and an angular lever mounted on said fulcrum and the end of which extends between and acts on the two shoulders 0n the plate, substantiallv as shown and described.
