0. s. STONE. PORTABLE SHELF.
Patented Aug; 6
INVENTOH ,4 TTOR/VEM UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFIC CHARLES SUMNER STONE, OF ERVING, MASSACHUSETTS.
PORTABLE SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,949, dated August 6, 1895. Application filed April 17, 1895- Serial ll'o. 546,105. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SUMNER STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Erving, county of Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Shelves, of which the following is a specification, referenoe being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to window shelves or brackets; and the object thereof is to provide a bracket-shelf adapted to be secured to the top bar of the lower sash or frame of a window or to'a Window-sill within a room or apartment, said bracket or shelf being adapted to support plants in pots, books, papers, drawing boards and material, and for many other purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 represents the top bar of the lower sash of a window provided with my improved bracket or shelf, the latter being also shown in section; Fig. 2, a perspective view of 'my bracket or shelf, and Fig. 3 a plan of a portion of the top thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the top bar of the window sash or frame to which my improved bracket or shelf is secured, the latter consisting of a plate or board 3, provided centrally of the bottom thereof with hangers or supports 4, rigidly secured thereto, and between which is pivoted a lever 5, which is provided at one end with a clamping-jaw 6 and at the other with a longitudinal slot 7, in which operates a screw 8, rigidly secured at one end to the plate or board 3 and on which is mounted a set-nut 9.
As sh own in the drawings, the plate or board 3 is provided on the side adjacent to the window with a cut-away portion 10, which is to clear the fastener on the window if one is provided at the point.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken-in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The bracket or shelf is placed in the position shown in Fig. l, the side of the plate or board adjacent to the top bar of the lower sash of the window and the corresponding end of the lever 5 beneath the same. The set-screw 9 is then operated to depress the outer end of the lever 5 and cause the inner end thereof to securely clamp the top bar of lower sash of the window between it and the side of the plate or board, as will be readily understood.
I do not limit myself to the exact form, construction, and combination of parts shown, as it is evident that many changes therein and modifications thereof may be madewithout departing fromthe scope of my inven tion, but,
Having fully described said invention, its construction and operation, what I claim, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent, is-- In a bracket or shelf of the character described, the combination of a plate 3, the
6 against a body arranged beneath the plate,
substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of April,
CHARLES SUMNER STONE. Witnesses:
WARREN M. KING, J OHN G. DEXTER.
