To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sayre, in the county of Beckham and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved device for fastening protective covers such as the protective cover of an ironing board, to an ironing board or other article.

The invention aims to provide a simple device of this kind that may be readily applied to existing types of ironing boards; to provide novel means for fastening the device to the board; to provide novel means whereby the device may be adjusted to tightly clamp the cover; and to provide a device of this kind that is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and durable in use.

This application embodies features disclosed in my co-pending application Serial #688,27 6, filed April 3rd, 1912, for ironing tables, allowed August 8th, 1913.

In accompanying drawings the preferred embodiment is illustrated, and therein Figure l is a side elevation illustrating the improved device in connection with an ironing board; Fig. 2 is a plan or top view illustrating the device in connection with an ironing board; Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section taken through the bail-tightening means employed, and associated parts and Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of the board and bail illustrating the detachable connection of one end of the bail to the board.

Throughout the views of the drawings, like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 designates an ironing board. The improved device is adapted for use particularly in connection with an ironing table, more specifically the ironing board thereof, disclosed in said pending application 688,276 but it is to be understood that it is capable of use in connection with practically all types of ironing boards and to this end merely an ordinary ironing board has been illustrated.

The bail employed is made separate from the board and may comprise side strips 2 connected by a flexible connecting strip 3 to extend around the front end of the board 1 and each strip 2 having at one end eyelet sections, preferably of metal, designated at, the eyelets or apertures thereof being designated 5. In order to support the bail properly with relation to the board 1, any desired number of supports or bracket plates 6 may be employed which are fastened at 7 to the under face of the board and which project laterally of the board beyond the sameas shown. One of the eyelets or apertures 5 opens into an elongated extension 6 thereof which converts the eyelet into a key hole eyelet or aperture. A lug in the form of a screw 8 having a head 9 is adapted to form a means on which the eyelet section having the key-hole aperture is adapted to fasten. In fastening such parts, the head 9 first extends through the eyelt 5 and then the section is moved longitudinally so that the shank of screw or lug 8 will be received in the elongated portion of slot 6 as seen in Fig. l.

A slidable tension plate or device 10 is fastened to one edge of the board 1 and to this end is provided with an elongated slot 11 through which passes a fastening screw 12 engaging the board. One end of the plate 10 terminates in a lug 11 which extends through the eyelet 5 of the adjacent eyelet section 4. The other end of the plate 10 terminates in a lug 13 having a screw threaded opening therein through which extends a screw rod 14. This screw rod 14 has a portion which is loosely journaled in a bearing lug 15 fastened by a screw 16 to the edge of the board. The screw is mounted in the bearing lug 15 against longitudinal movement and tothis end may have a pin 17 extend through the same on one side of the lug 15 and have a nut or head 18 mounted thereon on the other side of the lug. A. suitable finger piece to facilitate manipulation is provided on screw 14 and designated 19.

In use, one eyelet section 4: is fastened to the lug or screw 8 and the other eyelet section 1 is fastened to the slidable tension plate 10 with the lug 11 extending through the proper eyelet 5, the strips 2 loosely resting on the brackets 6 and the protective cover or covering placed over the board and between the strips 2 and spring section 3 and the edges of the board. Thereupon the screw 14 is operated through manual engagement with the finger piece 19, the screw threads owing to the fact that the screw does not move longitudinally, operating with the screw threads in the opening of lug 13, causing sliding movement of the plate 10 and accordingly causing tightening of the strips 2 and section 3 against the covering between the same and the board. It is obvious that in order to loosen the covering, the screw 14 is turned in the opposite direction to the proper extent.

It is to be especially noted that this device or attachment is not limited to use in connection with a single ironing board nor is it a construction that must be built into the board when manufactured. On the contrary the parts are of such nature that they can be attached to practically any ironing board and owing to the fact that the flexible strip 3 is provided, the bail may conform to practically any shaped ironing board.

I claim A cover securing attachment for ironing boards comprising, in combination with a board, a plurality of supports detachably secured to and extending from the under side thereof, a bail extending around said board and resting on said supports, said bail having a key-hole slot formed in one end thereof, a headed element carried by said board, said slot adapted to be detachably engaged with said element, said bail having an opening formed in the opposite end thereof, and means engageable with said opening to vary the tension of said bail.
