UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
EDWARD STIEMKE, MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
cAPPE-D wooo-SCREW. 'l
SPECIFICATION frmmg para o f Letters Patent No. 294,524, dated March 4, 1884.
I Application filed May 12,1883. (No model.)
To all whoml it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD STIEMKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps forWood-Screws and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wood-screws.
The object of my improvement is to provide a device for covering the heads of the screws, whereby their ornamental eifect is improved.
The construction of my improvement is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a vertical section of a woodscrew inserted in wood, provided with a projecting cap. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the screw with cap removed. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of my device, showing the cap flush with the surface of the wood. Fig. 4 is a top view of the device shown in Fig. 3.
Like parts are represented by the same ref-v erence-letters throughout the several views.
A represents the wood. B is a Wood-serew provided with a screw-cut hole, b. C is the cap, which 4is adapted to cover up the head 4o fthe screw B and shield it from sight. The cap Gis provided with a screw, d, which is inserted in the screw-cut hole b, whereby7 the cap is retained in place over the head of the wood-screw.
Y When desirous to use the caps for ornamental effect, they are preferably secured labove the surface of the wood, as shown in Fig. 1, when they may be screwed in place without the aid of instruments. If, however, it is desirous to sink the head below the surface, as shown in Fig. 3, it becomes necessary to provide the cap with holes c c, for the reception of a wrench or key by which said cap may be turned down flush with the surface.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A capped wood screw consisting'` of the screw A, having slotted head and screwthreaded hole b, and the screwcap C, provided on its upper surface with wrench-holes c c, and on its lower surface with a downward-projecting screw, d,,substantially as and for the purpose specified. i In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
