UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. HOFFMAN, OF PLEASANTVILLE, NEW YORK.
GRATER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. I"IOFF MAN, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Pleasantville, in the county of westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple but efl'ective grater for nutmegs, peppers and the like.
In the accompanying drawings, which show one form or embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 a central vertical section; Fig. 3 a side elevation partly in section of the cap and the attached upper grating disk; and Fig. 4 a horizontal section on the plane of the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings numeral 1 designates a cylindrical container made of sheet metal or other suitable material. This con tainer is externally screw threaded at its upper or open end 2 for such distance as will permit the lowering of the upper grinding disk to effect a complete grinding of the material as presently explained. The base of the container is perforated and suitably roughened or corrugated. This may be con vemently effected by striking up the metal in such manner as to leave projecting spurs or fins about the openings 3. A cap l, eX- ternally screw threaded as shown in the drawings, is provided to engage the upper screw threaded surface of the container 1 and to completely close the same. Secured to the cap is a central depending post 5 which carries at its lower end a grinding disk 6 having its under side roughened or corrugated. In the form shown the disk is perforated and the spurs or fins about the openings 7 formed by striking up the metal are sufficient for the purpose. The post 5 is of such length that by turning the cap in the proper direction the disk 6 will be forced downwardly against the nutmeg or peppers contained between said disk and the base of the container 1, and the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 4, 1908.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Serial No. 446,926.
continued rotation of the cap will effect the grinding of the material between the two roughened or corrugated surfaces as will be readily understood. The cap will be of sulficient depth to effect the complete grinding of the nutmeg or peppers by permitting the cap to be screwed down sulliciently to carry the disk 6 downwardly to a point immediately above the base of the container.
It is obvious that the base of the container and the under side of the disk 6 may be roughened or corrugated. in any well known manner other than that illustrated.
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the character described the combination of a container having a perforated and roughened screw threaded base, a cap screw threaded to said container, and a roughened disk supported from said cap and adapted to be moved to and from said base by the relative movement of said cap and container for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a container having its up per end externally screw threaded and a perforated and roughened base, a cap for said container interiorly screw threaded, a central post depending from said cap, and a rough ened disk secured to said post for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character described the combination of a container having a Hat perforated and roughened base, a flat topped imperforate cap adapted to engage the 0011- tainer, a central post fixed to and depending from said cap and a roughened disk secured to said post and adapted to be moved to and from said base by the relative movement of said cap and container for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. HOFFMAN.
WVitnesses:
CHARLES S. JoNns, K. G. LEARD.
