. R. GAMER EYE FOR HAR No. 581,807. Patented May 4, 1897.
llNTTnn STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
JOHN R. CAMERON, OF SHERMAN CITY, MICHIGAN.
COCKEYE FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,807, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed June 4, 1896.
To all 111710772, it may (NNLCEPTL:
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman City, in the county of Isabella and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coekeyes for Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cockeyes for harness, the object of the same being, among others, to provide such a device to which the trace or other part of the harness may be quickly attached and detached and which will be extremely strong.
The invention consists in a box or casing rectangular in shape, open at one end, formed with alug or projection on its under side, having a lid which is adapted to be screwed thereon and an elongated eye connected thereto. \Vithin this box or casing the end of the trace is adapted to tit, the same being provided with a slot through which the lug or projection passes.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my device with a portion of the trace shown therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of my device with its top or covering removed.
Like reference-numcrals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the details of the annexed drawings, 1 represents a casing which is open at its outer end and has alug or projection 2 rising from the under side thereof. It is also provided with the usual attaching-eye 3. The trace 4, having an elongated slot therein, is
$erial No. 594,272. (No model.)
adapted to fit within the casing 1, the lug or projection 2 fitting the slot 5 therein. A shoulder 6 is formed on the outer surface of the casing 1 by a dovetailed slot, and engaging the under side of the shoulder G is a clove tailed flange 7 on one end of the top 8 of the casing 1. This top 8 is also provided with a slot 9, through which projects a squared extension of the lug'2, which extension is perforated and adapted to receive a screw 10.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised a cockeye for the usual purposes to which said devices are put which is extremely simple in construction, neat in appearance, strong, and durable. It is almost impossible for the end of the trace to slip from the casing 1, but if it is desired to remove it it is only necessary to remove the screw 9, take oil the top 8, and slip out the trace. The reverse operation of inserting the trace is equally as simple.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a trace or other part of harness having an elongated slot therein, of a cockeye made up of a casing open at one end and closed at the other, an eye attached to said casing, a lug or projection rising from the under side of said casing and adapted to pass through the slot in said trace, a squared extension on said lug and a lid or cover for said casing having a slot therein, through which said squared extension passes and a screw for holding said top or cover in place.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J OIIN R. CAMERON.
