' fication.
This invention relates to improvements in ladders, and particularly to devices adapted to be attached to the lower ends of the side bars of the ladder, whereby the length of the ladder may be increased, the ladder adjusted to stand level on uneven or sloping surfaces, and whereby the ladder will be held from slipping upon roofs or other surfaces.
A further object of the invention is to provide extension devices which are simple in construction,.adapted to be easily applied and removed, and capable of being readily and conveniently adjusted for the purposes set forth.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a ladder, showing the application of the invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through one of the side bars of the ladder and the attachment thereon. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section of the ladder taken on a line centrally through the clamping plates. Fig. 4 is a view of the clamping plate detached.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a ladder which may be of ordinary or any preferred construction, said ladder having the usual side bars 2 connected by rungs 3. On the lower end of each side bar. of the ladder is fitted my improved attachment, the same comprising a sliding sleeve 4 formed of sheet metal or other suitable material. This sleeve 4 has its inner side open and provided with inturned retaining flanges 5, connected at their lower ends by a transverse bracing strip 6. The outer side of the sleeve is provided with a longitudinal slot 7 and transverse ribs, serrations or corrugations 8 along the opposite edges of said slot. Each sleeve forms a sidebar extension section, and is provided with atoothed or serrated lower end 8' whereby the ladder is adapted to be rested -the slot.
upon a roof or other smooth surface without liabllity of slipping thereon. For the purpose of securing each sleeve in adjusted position a clamping device is provided comprising a clamping plate 9 extending upon the outer side of the sleeve and having a corrugated, toothed or serrated inner face to engage and interlock with the serrated edges of This plate is formed with an angular head 10 seated in a correspondingly shaped socket in the bar 2 and carries a screw threaded shank 11 extending through said side bar and beyond the inner face thereof, a nut 12 being applied to the inner end of the shank, whereby the-plate'may be drawn into clamping engagement with the sleeve to hold the same firmly in adjusted positlon.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the sleeves or leg extensions may be adjusted upwardly above the lower ends of the side bars 2, so that the ladder may be used in the ordinary manner, or arranged so that their toothed or serrated lower ends will project slightly below the lower ends of the bars 2, in order that the ladder may be firmly engaged with a slippery surface. By adjusting both sleeves beyond the lower end of the ladder, the ladder may be extended or increased in length for ordinary use, and by projecting one of the sleeves below the ladder either side bar of the ladder may be extended independently of the other so'that the ladder may rest upon a sloping or uneven surface.
The advantages of the attachment will be apparent from the foregoing description. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is A ladder. each of the side bars of which is provided with a transverse passage rectangula'rly countersunk at its outer ends, an elongated longitudinal sleeve embracing each side bar, said sleeve having an outer wall provided with a longitudinal slot and series of teeth on opposite sides thereof, and front and rear walls formed with inturned flanges lapping the side bar and providing a longitudinal slot for the passage of the ladder rounds, a brace connecting the lower ends of the flanges, a rectangular clamping plate provided with rows of teeth to engage the teeth of the sleeve, a rectangular boss adapt edto project through the slot in the sleeve and engage the rectangular countersink of the passage, a bolt integral with said'boss and projecting therefrom through said In testimony whereof I'aflix my signature passage and1 thfough tha slot betgveent the in presence of two witnesses. flan es of t e s eeve, an a w1nge nu engagl ng the threaded inner end of the bolt SIDNEY ESKEW' 5 and bearing against the flanges. to hold the Witnesses:
plate in engagement with the sleeve to W. F. Srrmmn, maintain said sleeve in adjusted position. C. H. MILLER.
