COMBINED ,HANGER AND LIFT Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914:.
Application filed March 20, 1913. Serial No. 755,735.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BYRD C. RooKwnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of ()uachita and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Combined Hanger and Lift, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined hanger and lift for use in connection with window screens, storm sashes and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be used as a lift for sliding screens or sashes and which can also be used as a hanger for either full size or half size screens or storm sashes. Heretofore it has been found necessary to use different kinds of hangers for full size screens and half size screens and lifts to be used in connection with the screens have been entirely different from the hangers, thus necessitating carrying in stock three different kinds of hardware.
The present invention is designed to supply, in a single article, a device which can be used for hanging either full size or half size screens and which can also be used as a lift for sliding screens or sashes.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and which can be easily attached to the structure to be supported and also to. the window frame.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which engages insupporting means at a point above the upper edge of the screen being supported so that said screen can be easily swung outwardly away from the supporting structure without binding thereagainst.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the int ention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made with in the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of my invention have been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a screen supported by means of attachments such as constitute the present invention. 1 Fig. 2 is a shank or base of any desired outline and substantially rigid and provided with spaced openings, 2 adapted to receive fastening screws or the like. Extending from this shank or base is an elongated tongue 3 having a longitudinal slot 4 and this tongue is normally curved, as indicated at 5 in Fig. 4: so as to constitute the finger engaging portion of a lift.
It is to be understood that the device herein described is to be placed on the market in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and can be readily applied to the lower portion of a screen so as to be used as a lift. By having the longitudinal slot in the lift, the danger of the fingers slipping from under the lift while raising the screen or the like is reduced to the minimum, this being due to the fact that the edges of the slot are presented to the fingers in the same manner as are the side edges of the lift. If, however, it should be desired to use the same device for the purpose of supporting a screen or the like, the curved tongue is flattened out, by means of a hammer, or the like so that the device will appear as illustrated in Figsnl and 3. By forming a longitudinal slot which extends throughout the curved portion of the lift, the said curved portion can be more readily flattened out by means of a hammer than would otherwise be possible. A pair of these devices is to be used for this purpose, one of them being connected to each of the upper corner portions of the screen A and the tongues 3 of the said devices being extended obliquely so as to diverge upwardly. These slotted tongues will thus lap or extend partly across the sides of the window casing or other structure inwhich the screen is arranged and by driving nails B or the like through the slots and into the casing, it will be seen that the screen A will thus be properly supported within the casing. Furthermore as the tongues are extended along upwardly diverging lines, they will cooperate with the supporting devices B to hold the screen centered within the screen receiving opening. Then, too, as the tongues loosely engage the supporting devices B, it
Will be apparent that the screen can be swung outwardly readily. If the screen extends throughout the height of the Window casing, the tongues can be extended vertically instead of obliquely if so desired.
The device constituting the present invention is formed of comparatively thin metal Which can be bent easily by the use of a hammer or the like and, as the device is quite thin, the base or shank thereof can be inserted between the molding and the edge of the frame stock if so desired.
What is claimed is A lift including a rigid base for attachment to a screen or the like, and a curved finger engaging portion having a longitudinal slot extending throughout the length thereof whereby said portion can be conveniently flexed into alinement With the base to form a hanger, the edges of the slots constituting means for engaging and preventing slipping of the finger engaging the lift, said finger having its free end spaced from the base to permit movement of a finger upwardly into engagement With the curved finger. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
