. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIERSOIEI J WIOKS, OF SALTEBSVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
BILL-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,688, dated March 2'7, 1883.-
Application filed October 16, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PIERSON J. W1oKs, of Saltersville, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Bill-File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved file for filing'bills, papers, 8130., from which file any bill or other paper can easily be removed and replaced without removing the rest.
The invention consists in 2a bill-file formed of a hook secured on a back or base, and having its free end beveled, from which free end the thickness of the hook increases toward the fixed end. Alatch-rod, havingits end beveled, is secured by means of a spring to a rod projecting from the base, which spring presses the beveled end of the latch-rod against the beveled end of the hook. If a certain bill is to be removed, the bills filed later are pushed upward on the part above the latch, which is then pressed back to permit removing the desired bill.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,.formin g a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bill-hook. Fig.2is a perspectiveview of a modification of the same.
A hook, A,having its free end beveled, as shown, is secured in some suitable manner to a back or base, B, of wood or metal. The said hook is curved downward from its fixed end, and then extends vertically upward, and increases in thickness or cross-section from the beveled end down to the curved part. A rod, 0, having its end bent downward, projects rectangularly from the upper part of the back or base B, and to the lower end of its bent part a latch-rod, D, is held by means of a spring, E, which presses the lower beveled end of the latch-rod D against the upper bev- 5 eled end of the book A.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the hook I A is straightened, and the rods 0 and D are also vertical, the former being curved at its upper end.
The device shown in Fig. 1 is adapted to be hung on a wall, 850., and the device shown in Fig. 2 is adapted to rest on a desk. In both cases the springs E should be countersunk, so as to be flush with the outer surfaces of the rods 0 and D.
The operation is as follows: To file bills, letters, 860-, the beveled end of the latch-rod D is pressed from the beveled end of the hook A, which beveled end of the hook pierces the paper, which bill is then suspended from the said hook A. As the hook A increases in thickness, the hole made in the paper by the same is larger than the cross-section of the rods 0 or D, and thus permits of pushing the bills, papers, 850., upward upon the rods'O and D "ery easily. For instance, if one of the first bills filed is to be removed from the file, all the bills that have been filed after the desired one are pushed upward until they hang from the rod 0, and then the desired bill can be removed by pressing the beveled end of the latch-rod D from thebeveled end of the hook A. The file shown in Fig. 2 is operated in a similar manner. In both cases the spring E and latch-rod D close the file automatically.
I am aware that it is not new to form abillfile of a single wire made fast to a base and its two ends so bent as to be brought together, or of two wires, one being bent over to meet the other, or of two wires whose ends lap each other; but
What I do claim as new and of my invention is- In a bill-file, the combination, with a base,
B, having the hook A at its lower end, of the 8 end-bent rod O'at the upper end, the latchrod D, and the spring E, as shown anddescribed.
