SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,172, dated July 14, 1896.

Application filed April 27 1896- Serial No. 589,353. (No model) and useful Improvements in Bill-Files; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bill-files and my object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and efficient in use; and to these ends the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanyin g drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the first steps in the manufacture of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective View illustrating the device attached to a card or base. Fig. 4 illustrates another form of construction.

Referring now specially to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the device consists of the base-loop 5, the spring-supported thumb-loop 6, the springcoil 7, the forward extension 8, whose extremity is formedinto an upwardly-projecting brad 8, and the forward extension 9, whose extremity is formed into an eye or horizontal loop 9, through which the brad 8 passes.

The first step in manufacturing the device (see Fig. 1) is to form the central portion of the wire into the spring-coil 7, leaving the parts A and B projecting from'the extremities of the coil. The part A is then bent to form the base-loop 5, passed through the coil 7 in the direction indicated bythe arrow, (see Fig. 2,) again bent and carried forward, forming the part 8, its extremity beingbent upward to form the brad 8. The part B of the wire is then bent to form the thumb-loop 6, passed through the coil in the direction opposite that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, and again bent and carried forward, forming the part 9, its extremity being formed into the eye or loop 9, surrounding the brad 8. (See Fig. 3.) The thumb-lo0p 6 projects upward from the base-loop at an angle of about forty-five degrees. The extension 9 occupies a position above the part 8. The base-loop 5 and the extension 8 may be fastened to a card 10 by means of any suitable fastening devices, as small staples 12.

The device is specially adapted for use with a card containing advertising matter and a calendar or any other useful information. The card maybe either hung upon the wall or laid upon a table or desk.

From the foregoing description the use of the device will be readily understood. By pressing the thumb-loop downward toward the base-loop the part 9 is raised sufficiently to lift the eye or loop 9 above the top of the brad 8. WVhile the device is held in this position the bills or papers to be filed are stuck upon the brad 8. The thumb-loop is then released, and the eye 9 descends upon said bills or papers and holds them securely in place until it is desired to remove them. To release the bills or papers, it is only neccssary to again press the thumb-loop until the eye 9 is raised above the top of the brad.

It must be understood that I do not limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, as I am aware that other constructions may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The device, if desired, may be formed double. (See Fig. 4.) In this case the base-loop may be omitted. There are two brads 8, two forward extensions 8, two forward extensions 9, two coil parts 7 and two thumb-loop parts 6. In forming the device one of the coil parts 7 is first formed, then from the inner extremity of this coil part the wire is carried backward and formed into one of the loop parts 6, thence forward, making one of the extensions 9. It is then bent into a large loop 9, thence carried backward, forming in succession the other extension 9, the other loop part 6, the other coil part 7, and the other extension 8. The extensions 8 terminate in the brads 8, which project up through the large loop. This form of the device may be fastened to a card by the use of staples or other fastening devices (not-shown) embracing the parts 8, which would engage the card or base. A clasp 22 is preferably applied to the two parts 6. The two coil parts 7 are connected by a pin 13, which is surrounded by the coil parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a device of the character described, formed from a single piece of wire and comprising the base-loop-the spring-supported thumbloop, the forward extension 9 terminating in a loop or eye 9, and the forward extension 8 terminating in a hook or brad 8 adapted to pass through the eye 9, substantially as de scribed.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising the coil 7 the base-loop 5, the extension 8 terminating in a brad S, the thumb-loop 6, and the extension 9 terminating in the eye or loop 9, the several elements being arranged substantially as described.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, a device of the class described, comprising the coil 7, the base-loop 5, forming a continuation of the wire at one extremity of the coil, the extension 8 forming an extension of the loop 5 after the Wire passes through the coil, the part 8 terminating in ,a brad 8, the thumb-loop 6 forming a continuation of the coil 7, the extension 9 forming a continuation of the loop 6 after the wire passes through the coil in the opposite direction, the part 9 terminating in an eye or loop through which the brad 8 is adapted to pass substantially as described.

l. The combination with a suitable supporting card or base, of a bill-file suitably attached thereto, and comprising the baseloop 5, the extension 8 having the hook 8, the spring-supported thumb-loop 6, and the extension 9 having the eye or loop 9 cooperating with the hook, substantially as described.

5. As an improved article of manufacture, a device of the class described, comprising the spring-coil, the forward extension terminating in a brad, the rearward extension forming a thumb-loop, and the forward extension forming a loop through which the brad projects, substantially as described.
