HEEL-COUNTER SUPPORT FOR SHOES.
Application filed October 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD H. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow Creek, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel- Counter Supports for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved heel counter support for shoes and has for its primary object to provide a very simple device of this character which may be readily applied to the ordinary shoe heel and provides a very serviceable brace or reinforcement for the heel counter.
The invention has for a more particular object to provide a device of the above character constructed from a single metal plate having a flaring end portion for engagement upon the heel counter and a laterally extending, curved arm on its opposite end to extend upon the periphery of the shoe heel, said plate and arm being provided with suitable means whereby the device may be securely fixed to the shoe heel.
With the above and other objects in View,
. my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed andillustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe, showing my improved counter support applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device detached from the shoe.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the shoe as a whole, 6 the heel there'- of and 7 the heel counter.
My improved counter support is formed from a metal plate 8 of requisite width and thickness. One end of this plate is gradually increased in width and preferably of substantially semi-circular form, as shown at 9. This widened end of the plate, when the device is applied, extends upon the heel counter 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Upon the other end of the plate, a narrow, angularly extending flange 10 is formed to engage under the shoe heel, said flange having apertures in its opposite ends to receive suitable nails or other fastening elements, indicated at 11. Immediately adjacent to this flange 10, a curved arm 12 extends laterally from one of the longitudinal edges of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 27, 1916.
Serial No. 56,249.
the plate 8. This arm, adjacent to its tervminal, is provided with an opening to receive the fastening screw 13.
In the application of the device to the shoe as shown in Fig. 1, the plate 8 is arranged upon one side of the shoe heel ad acent to its inner edge and secured by means of a number of screws 14: to the heel. The flange 10 is then fastened to the heel bottom by the nails 11. The curved arm 12 will extend around the shoe heel to the back thereof at its approximate center and is securely fixed to the heel by the screw 13. The widened end 9 of the plate 8, extending upwardly upon the heel counter, provides a brace or support therefor, and
'the laterally extending curved arm which 1s fixed to the back of the shoe heel obviates a shifting movement of this upwardly extending plate from its applied position and securely retains the same in place. By means of such a device, the breaking or collapse of the heel counter will be entirely obviated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood.
The shoe heel may be made in various sizes for application to different size shoes, as will be readily understood.
The form and proportion of the several structural features of the counter bracing plate may be also variously modified and it will, therefore, be understood that I reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shoe heel counter protector consisting of a sheet metal plate having a rectangular body portion adapted to extend vertically upon one side of the shoe heel adja cent the inner edge thereof and having openings to receive suitable fastening screws, said plate having an extension adapted to project upwardly upon the shoe heel counter, the lower edge of said plate having an angularly disposed flange thereon to extend under the shoe heel and provided with openings to receive fastening elements whereby the same may be fixed to the heel, and an arm disposed in the same plane with the body of said plate and curved laterally from one edge thereof around the peripheralrface of the heel and adapted to be fixed at its extremity to the shoe heel at its approximate center.
2. A shoe heel counter protector consisting of a metal plate adapted to be arranged exteriorly upon the shoe heel at one side thereof and adjacent to its inner edge, said plate having openings to receive fastening screws whereby the same may be fixed to the heel, said plate at one end being widened and bearing upon the shoe heel counter and Copies of this patent may be obtained for the cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patextx,
having a flange on its other end to extend under the shoe heel to be fixed thereto, and a laterally extending curved arm integrally formed upon the latter end of the plate to extend around the shoe heel to the back thereof and adapted to be fixed at its extremity to the shoe heel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
