To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GEORGE MAGMILLAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Type-Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has for its object to provide a type guard the ends of which are held yieldingly extended, so that the type guard may be disposed between reglets with its ends pressing against the reglets for holding the type set between the reglets in position, and without it being necessary to fill the space between the reglets and between the type with furniture and quoins. It is also possible to arrange one or more of these type guards for holding type and cuts in position, when the type is set and the cuts are arranged for display.

Additional objects of my invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my type guard; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in 1, but in section; Fig. 3 is a view showing how the type guards may be arranged for holding the type in position between the reglets; Fig. at is a side elevation of a portion of one of my type guards, and some type set next thereto, showing the type extending a distance above the type guard, so that the type guard will not interfere in making proofs or in printing; and Fig. 5 is a view showing another manner in which the type guard may be used for holding the reglets apart.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a member 5 is provided, having sides 6 and ends 7 and 8. The end 7 has an opening 9, with an outwardly extending sleeve 10, therearound, the body or central portion 11 of the member 12 being disposed in this sleeve 10 and opening 9, so that its inner end 13 will be disposed between the ends 7 and 8 of the member 5. This inner end 13 of the member 12 is bent at 14, so that the end 13 will be disposed substantially parallel with the ends 7 and 8 of the member 5. It will therefore be seen that Specification of Letters ?atent.

when a spring 15 is disposed within the sides of the member 5, and between the end 13 of the member 12, and the end 8 of the member 5, it will serve to hold the member 12 yieidingly extended, but as the end 13 is disposed parallel with the end 7 of the member 5, this will prevent the disengagement of the member 12 from the member 5. The sleeve 10, through which the body 11 of the member 12 extends, will prevent the movement of the member 12 out of position laterally relatively to the member 5. The outer end 16 of the member 12 is bent at the point 17, so that the outer end 16 is disposed substantially parallel with the inner end 13.

In using this type guard it may be disposed between the reglets 18 and 19, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, for holding these reglets 18 and 19 yieldingly apart, so that the reglet 19 will press against the type 20 to hold this type in position, and the reglet 18 will press against the type 21 to hold the said type 21 in position, itbeing therefore unnecessary to fill the space 22 with furniture and quoins as is customary under the present practice. The type guard may also be disposed between a reglet 28 and the reglet 24;, and parallel with the line of type 25, for holding this type 25 in position. When the type guard is so disposed, another type guard may be disposed in the same column at a distance therefrom, as shown in Fig. 3, and in the same manner, so that the type 26 will be held in place, and without it being necessary to fill the space 27 between the type 25 and 26 with furniture or quoins.

Not only may the type guard be used in the manner indicated, but it is possible to use two of these type guards as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to hold type and cuts which are set and arranged for display.

As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the type guard 28 is disposed in an upright position in column and another type guard 29 is disposed obliquely relatively thereto, the end 16 of this type guard 29 pressing against the end 16 of the type guard 28, and a corner 30 of the member 5 of this type guard 29 pressing against the reglet 31, and the members 5 and 12 of this type guard being parallel with and disposed against the reglet 32 for holding the said reglet in position for holding the type 83 in place.

Having thus described my invention, I

' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a type guard, a member having an end, and a second end spaced therefrom, there being an opening in the second end, a second member disposed through the opening and extending beyond the second end, a flange 011 the second member disposed between and substantially parallel with the ends of the first member, and a spring disposed between the fiange and the first-mentioned end, for holding the second member yieldingly extended relatively to the first member.

2. In a type guard, a member having sides and ends With an opening through one of the ends, and a sleeve extending around the name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
