Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2,1913.
Application filed Ju1y17, 1911. Serial No. 638,855.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, RUDoLF P. O. SAHM. a subject of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Rules for Irregular Curves, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to drawing instruments and aims to provide an instrument which can be adjusted to form such irregular curves as the occasion requires.
Another object of this improved instrument is that the same may be adjusted to form irregular curves and after the same has been adjusted it can be securely held against any movement whatsoever.
A still further object of this device is to produce a simple, efficient and inexpensive instrument and one which is so constructed as to assure its capability and durability.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. i
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my instrument. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my instrument. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my instrument. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of my instrument. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of my instrument taken on line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing one end of my instrument.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a suitable body portion 1 which has the machine nuts 2 sunk therein. Secured to each end of the body portion 1 by any suitable means are the brackets 3 which have the extensions t formed thereon. A section of the brackets 3 are bent at substantially right angles for a purpose that will be hereinafter fully described. Positioned upon the body portion 1 near the ends thereon are the sections of elastic material 5. Disposed between the ends of the extensions 4 and the elastic sections are the ends 6 of a section of springy material 7. The ends 6 of the section 7 are each proparts without vided with a recessed portion 8 adapted to receive the extension 4% of the brackets 3. By positioning the ends of the extensions l in these recessed portions on the ends of the section 7 the vertical movement of the section is limited.
. Extending through the body portion 1 and engaging the machine nuts 2, are screw threaded bolts 9. On one end of the bolts 9 are the bosses 10. Formed on the other end of the bolts 9' are the enlarged portions 11 which are provided with the exteriorly located milled manipulating surfaces 12. Also formed in the section 7 are the second recesses 13 which are adapted to receive one of the bosses 10 which are formed on the bolts 9. A plate 14 is also secured to the section 7 through which extends the end of the bolts 9, one of the bosses 10 on each bolt being in one of the cut out portions 13 and the other boss being on the outer side of the plate.
It will be seen that when one of the bolts 9 is rotated in a certain way, it will tendv to push the section 7 away from'the body portion whereby a curve may be formed. As the section 7 is pushed away from the body portion the ends 6 of the said section will be slightly drawn from between the ends of the extension 4: and the elastic sections 5. When this operation occurs the elastic material will give slightly whereby a more graceful curve may be formed. It will be also seen that by having the bosses 10 on the bolts 9, the bolts are allowed to turn easily while the section 7 is held securely.
It is thought that from the foregoing the advantages and novel features of the invention will be appreciated.
I also desire it to may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of deviating from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina device of the character described,
a body portion provided at each end with.
a bracket, said brackets being provided in turn with inwardly projecting extensions, a section of springy material provided at each end with a recessed portion for the reception of said extensions, said recessed porbe understood that I above said recesses 13 i 7 bolts extending through 7 of elastic material secured to said body portion and in engagement with the ends of said 'springy material and bolts extending through said body portion and secured to said strip whereby the same may be adjusted for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character described,
a body portion provided at each end with brackets, said brackets, in turn, provided with inwardly projecting extensions, a strip of springy material having its ends provided with recesses for the reception of said 7 extensions, said recesses adapted to limit the vertical movement or said member, sections of elastic material disposed between said body portion and the ends of said strip, bolts extending through said body portion and provided with bosses, plates secured about said bolts and between said bosses, said plates having connection with said strip whereby when said bolts are adjusted said strip will be curved for the purpose described.
