PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,881, dated May 26,1903. Application filed September 8, 1902. Serial No. 122,457. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DONALDSON, of
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character having the movable jaw so constructed that it may oscillate relatively to the fixed jaw and in the same plane therewith, means being provided whereby the movable jaw in its direction of oscillation imparted by the application of the wrench to a pipe or other object to turn it will approach the fixed jaw.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. v
Of the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side' elevation of a wrench embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the same with the movable jaw in its extreme clamping position.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
The handle of the wrench is represented at 5 and is provided with a fixed jaw 6, which maybe smooth or serrated. Rising from the top of the handle adjacent to the jaw portion is a guide projection 7, which is of a more or less common form, said projection preferably having a lateral opening for the play of the nut, hereinafter described. Extending through a longitudinal opening in the guide projection 7 is the threaded shank 9 of the movable jaw 8, which latter jaw may also be smooth or serrated. Within the lateral opening of the guide projection 7 is a nut 10, fitting the threaded shank of the movable jaw. As so far described the construction more or less closely resembles a well-known type of pipe-wrench.
In carrying out my invention I make the longitudinal opening in the guide projection A 7 sufficiently large to permit the threaded shank of the movable jaw to oscillate therein, and the said guide projection is formed with an inclined or beveled face I) at the lower end of the flat bearing-face a. I preferably interpose between the nut 10 and the face a a plate or washer 0, having a beveled or inclined lower edge (1, adapted to coact with the inclined or beveled face 6, as presently described.
In the operation of the wrench it is applied to a pipe, (indicated conventionally at w,) as represented in Fig. 1, the nut 10 being set up sufiiciently to cause the pipe to be grasped between the two jaws. Thereupon a move ment of .the handle 5 in the direction of the 'arrow in Fig. 1 causes the parts to move toward the position shown in Fig. 2, during which movement the threaded shank of the movable jaw oscillates in the longitudinal opening of the guide projection 7, so that the inclined or beveled edge 01 of the plate or washer c rides down the beveled bearing-face I), thus drawing the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, thereby causing an exceedingly close bite on the pipe or other cylindrical object which is being operated upon.
I do not limit myself to the employment of the plate or washer 0, since, as is obvious, the lower edge of the nut 10 may bear against the inclined face I); but inasmuch as this would tend to unduly wear the edge of the nut I preferably employ the said plate or washer c, the lower beveled edge of which forms an extended bearing to take up the wear against the inclined bearing-face b.
It will be seen that I have provided a construction in which the fulcrum moves along an inclined surface so as to increase the bite the farther the fulcrum moves along said inclined surface. It will also be observed that the faces of the jaws are shown as inclined as well as serrated. tion, as it cooperates with the inclined faces I) and d in grasping the object to be operated upon.
If the plate or washer c is omitted and the nut alone relied upon to bear against the faces a and b, I preferably bevel one edge of the nut, as indicated at 10. When the nut is to I prefer this construe be so used, it will be reversed from the position shown in the drawings.
I claim 1; A pipe-wrench comprising a handle having a jaw fixed relatively thereto and a guide projection, a movable jaw having a threaded shank passing through said guide projection and adapted to oscillate therein, said projection havingaflat bearing-face and an inclined face at the lower end of said flat face, and
means carried by the shank of the movable tion having a flat bearing-face and an inclined face at the lower end of said flat face, a nut on the shank of the movable jaw, and a platev interposed between the nut and the flat bearing-face, said plate having a beveled edge to cooperate with the said inclined bearing-face.
3. A pipe-wrench comprising a handle having a jaw fixed relatively thereto, and a guide projection formed with a lateral opening and with a longitudinal opening, a movable jaw having a threaded shank passing through the longitudinal opening of the guide projection and adapted to oscillate therein, the said projection having a flat bearing-face at the lower end thereof, a nut located in the lateral opening of the guide projection and fitted to the shank of the movable jaw, and a flat plate mounted on the shank of the movable jaw in front of the nut, said plate having a beveled lower edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
