Description

No. 888,865. v PATENTED DEC. '18, 1906. K. K. KIHLMARK.
HATGHET.
APPLIOATIONTILED AUG.8, 1906.
KARL KONRAD KIHLMARK, OF MoKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
HATCHET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed August 8,1906. $eria1 No. 329.738.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL KONRAD K1111.- MARK, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at McKees Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Hatchets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hatohets and the invention has for its object to provide a light hand-hatchet having a claw of peculiar and novel construction and arrangement for pulling nails.
My invention aims to combine a claw-hammer and a hatchet into a useful tool for carpenters. To this end I provide the hammer end of a hatchet with a rearwardly and inwardly extending claw, which can be easily and quickly placed in engagement with a nail and the latter partly withdrawn by using the body of the hatchet as a lever, and then by using the handle of a hatchet as a lever withdrawal of the nail can be easily and quickly completed and without deflecting the nail.
The detail construction of my improved hatchet will be hereinafter described, illustrated, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hatchet. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head of the hatchet, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated an ordinary light hand-hatchet comprising a handle 1, upon the one end of which is fixed a head 2, said head having a beveled cutting edge or plate 3 and an enlargement l, which serves functionally as a hammer-head.
My invention resides in providing the enlargement 4 with a claw comprising two rearwardly-extending prongs 5, forming a V-shaped notch 6. The prongs extend rearwardly from the hammer-head under the edge of the head 2 and also substantially parhatchet, with the effect of starting the nail, a
very strong leverage being thus applied and without severely straining the handle. After the nail has been withdrawn as far as the movement of the short nip attainable by this action the movement is reversed by bringing the point of the cutting edge ofthe hatchet into contact with the body in which the nail is located and the withdrawal of the nail completed by pressure upon the handle 1. Thus the nail is withdrawn bodily without deflection thereof and without severely straining the handle.
The hammer head or enlargement 4 is reinforced, as at 7 adjacent to the prongs 5, and when the prongs are constructed of strong and durable metal, as hardened steel, the prongs will not be liable to break when Withdrawing a nail.
My invention resides principally in providing the hammer-head of the hatchet with a claw of novel construction and arrangement, and I do not care to confine myself to the construction of the remainder of the hatchet or the type of hatchet in connection with which the claw is used.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the head of a hatchet, of a nail-pulling device comprising diverging claws disposed substantially parallel to the outer end of the hatchet-body and extending toward the handle portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
KARL KONRAD KIHLMARK.
